BBC article

Mixed feelings about this; on the one hand it's a shame as he was actually starting to make some progress with welfare reform and had some good ideas... but on the other hand the media coverage was getting increasingly, how should I put this? Vicious? Relentless? Outright sick at times? (especially that little piece of footage they kept running; "watch us stalk a blind man walking his dog! He doesn't know we're filming him! Look how big and clever we are!) and had been going on (with all sorts of different stories) for six weeks or so.

Couple of things to come out of this; first off it's probably a good idea to change the ministerial code to make it compulsory and clearly so, secondly it's not a good idea to blind and have the U.K media hate you and thirdly... the inevitable cabinet reshuffle.

As always the BBC's Have Your Say board is a monument to the essential goodness, kindness and above all sanity of humanity:

Or... maybe not?

First page is pretty bad, but the others are even worse...

Blunkett was right to resign because, at the end of the day, I can't criticise politicians of the opposite political colours unless my own get their house into order

Thanks for the comments like, Al, but I won't bother reading the comments. Some I'm sure will talk sense and make a valid point, but others will be talking out of their backsides and I won't be wasting any of my time on that lot!

Did you ever read the post-General Election comments, Al?

Some arse of a wife commented that since most of Scotland is orange (LD) and most of England is blue (Con), then how do we have a Labour government? Answer: a lot of people live in those red bits, lass! That's about the level of intellect from regular 'Have Your Say' contributors

Thinking about it, this is an unusual example of a politician resigning for what he presumably sees as "the greater good"; usually a "resignation" is basically getting fired, but that doesn't seem to be the case with this one.
Quite odd actually.

It would be a total waste of time. There are some geniunely braindead comments on there... including one that calls for Blunkett to be assasinated (!) and one that makes an especially nasty remark about "short sightedness".

He had to go, although I can see the triviality behind many of the accusation, particularly in regards to hounding by the media (David McLetchie succumbed to the same thing) But if Labour were in opposition and it was Conservative minister, they too would be calling for blood. If you set the ball rolling in opposition, you have to be prepared if they come back and get you in government.

Probably true; this thing is also yet another example of the way the media's little vendetta's against certain politicians ends up dominating the political agenda for weeks.
Part of the problem is how centralised the media is these days; they all live and work with each other after all...

Blunkett has given a very strong hint that he might sue Max Clifford (not over this but another story) in the not so distant future.

You mean Lord Stansgate IV.

And is it just me, or do all the D-UK avatars make it look like Al has made every post in this thread.

You mean have a few blue avatars here and there? I highly doubt it. I may a Conservative in Britain but I'm a Democrat supporter on this board. There is nothing false about it, it's how I feel.
