Read this thread first!: Progressive Election 2008 (II)

Rell and Bond are up again for the Republicans. The Democrats unite behind Russ Feingold after he wins both Iowa and New Hampshire by large margins. He chooses the runner-up, Senator Janet Napolitano from Arizona, as his VP candidate.

Day 1: Oklahoma heads to the polls and kick-starts Rell's re-election bid.

Rell leads 7-0.

Day 2: Maine votes. Rell wins the second CD and at-large, but the first district is too close to call.

Rell leads, 10-0.

Day 3: Maine's first district is called as North Carolinans vote. The announcement gives Rell a boost as she easily defeats Feingold.

Rell leads, 26-0.

Day 4: Kentucky votes, and continues Rell's run.

Rell leads, 34-0.

Day 5: Whilst Rell does better then in 2008, she still loses New York.

Rell leads, 34-31.

Days 6+7. Weekend. Both VP candidates spend their weekend in New Mexico, as does Feingold. Rell spends her Saturday there, but Sunday in Arkansas.

Day 8: Arkansas votes, and Rell wins it 52-48.

Rell leads, 40-31.

Day 9: Minnesota supports Feingold, 56-44. His campaign is back on track as he takes the lead.

Feingold leads, 41-40.

Day 10: South Dakota votes for Rell, and she retakes the lead.

Rell leads, 43-41.

Day 11: New Mexico votes, and Napolitano does her job, as Feingold pulls off a narrow win by 3,182 votes.

Feingold leads, 46-43.

Day 12: Delaware supports Feingold.

Feingold leads, 49-43.

Days 13+14: The weekend. The first debate is held in Des Moines. Rell continues her losing streak in debates, giving Feingold a boostn going into the next week. Feingold spends Saturday in Florida with Napolitano, and Sunday in Iowa whilst Napolitano is in New Jersey. Bond spends his weekend in Iowa, where Rell visits on Sunday, spending her Saturday in Florida.

during the Bush lame-duck period an American ship was blown up in Kuwait, and Iraq has slowly wound down a bit. Now, there's about two insurgent attacks a week, but they're still as vicious. The Iraqi people still very much resent the Americans, but onsider them to be the lesser of three evils over Sadaam and the Insurgents. Still, a growing minority are reminiscing about the Baathists.

North Korea is same old, same old; but it's been confirmed they do indeed have nukes.

Putin was assasinated in 2006, just making his party stronger.

On the home front, the economy is screwed up bigtime. Foreign Debt is at it's highest, unemployment is at 5.8%, etc.; but Americans are kinda used to it by now, so it's not as big an issue as it would've been in 2004, or 2008.

The Democrats retook the house in 2008, but only hold it by a slim margin; the GOP still controls the Senate.

That's about it really.

Day 15: Attention turns to Iowa. Despite their efforts, Feingold's team are unable to beat the President, who wins by 13,657 votes, and takes the EC lead.

Rell leads, 50-49.

Day 16: Utah votes for Rell, further confirming her lead.

Rell leads, 55-49.

Day 17: Florida votes, and all indication suggest Rell will improve on her vote in 2008, but will t be enough? When the networks call the state at only 11:30pm, it's clear that Feingold just didn't have the pull he was hoping for-Rell wins 55-45.

Rell leads, 82-49.

Day 18: Rell's doing well as Hawai'i votes, but Feingold still wins by a comfortable margin.

Rell leads, 82-53.

Day 19: New Jersey supports Feingold, but in a result that dissapointed the Democrats there.

Rell leads, 82-68.

Days 20+21: The weekend. Feingold believes this is the time for action-the next five states are all Dem-friendly, or at least moderate; and he needs to win at least 4 of them. He spends his weekend in Michigan, along with Bond. Rell spends Saturday in Michigan and Sunday in Rhode Island, whilst Napolitano splits her weekend between Michigan and California.

Day 22: Feingold gets a boost as California supports him by a surprisingly large margin, 57-43.

Feingold leads, 123-83.

Day 23: After being close in 2008, Rhode Island votes more confidently for the guy with the 'mo. Momentum, that is; the style guys said a moustache was out of the question despite Russ's pleas.

Feingold leads, 127-83.

Day 24: Whilst Feingold had hoped to follow Warner's lead and win Virginia, Rell is in the lead when counting finishes for the night, by over 5,000 votes. That said, some heavily Democratic NOVA areas are yet to report, although Feingold would need to win them by a significant but certainly possible margin to pull through.

Rell leads, 127-83.

Day 25: The uncertainty in Virginia remains unresolved, as throughout the day Feingold crept closer and closer to Rell's figures. This doesn't affect the result in Illinois, however, which overwhelmingly supports Feingold. Virginia is eventually called for Rell after it is worked out Feingold would need to break 70% of the absentee votes.

Feingold leads, 148-96.

Day 26: Michigan votes, and many pundits believe it will be the defining state of the election. Literally tens of millions of dollars have flowed into the state, as the Republicans spent almost the whole week concentrating on it and the Democrats continued their big splurge into the third week. Again, the results are not known by the end of counting, although Rell maintins a slight lead with some UP counties not fully reporting.

Feingold leads, 148-96.

Days 27+28: The weekend. Nerves are at their tensest yet as the results trickle in on Saturday morning for the UP. Feingold is in Oregon when he is informed he has taken the lead, campaining in a Eugene retirement village. By the time he reaches a Union Hall in Portland, Rell's back in front, and the state is called for Rell by 31 votes. A recount does occur, but Rell maintains the lead, with 4 extra votes in the recount. She spent her weekend in Oregon and Texas, whilst Bond was in Georgia and North Dakota. Feingold spent his dissapointing weekend in Oregon, along with Napolitano who flew to Georgia on Sunday. Virginia is also wrapped up formally, with a Rell win of just over 1,500 votes.

Day 29: Rell retakes the lead with a strong win in Texas, much improved on her 2008 effort.

Rell leads, 160-148.

Day 30: Oregon heads to the polls giving Feingold a bit of a reprieve from Rell, but he does not replace her as leader.

Rell leads, 160-155.

Day 31: The focus was on Georgia for the last day of the 2008 campaign, and it returns once again as Rell wins the state.

Rell leads, 175-155.

Day 32: North Dakota also votes for Rell.

Rell leads, 178-155.

Day 33: Alaska heads to the polls further enhancing Rell's lead.

Rell leads, 181-155.

Days 34+35: The weekend. Rell seems to be in a good place as the 'home state' week starts. With the next five polls being held in Arizona, Connecticut, Missouri, DC and Wisconsin, everyone is wondering how well the candidates will do at home. Feingold spends Saturday in Wisconsin and Sunday in Missouri, Napolitano spends all her time in Arizona. Bond spends Saturday in Arizona and Sunday in Missouri, whilst Rell spends Saturday in Arizona and Sunday in Wisconsin, confident of victory in her home state of Connecticut.

Day 36: Arizona heads to the polls. Whilst close all week in polling, with but sides seeing wins, on the day the Dems get the base out for their favourite daughter to win the state by almost 40,000 votes.

Rell leads, 181-165.

Day 37: Rell hopes for a better result in Connecticut, and she receives it-a commanding victory for the GOP.

Rell leads, 188-165.

Day 38: The Rell/Bond team hopes for more good news from Missouri, but by the nights end they haven't gotten it-the state is too close to call.

Rell leads, 188-165.

Day 39: The Republican bandwagon comes to a grinding halt with a very strong Feingold win in DC. Also, Missouri is called, by 192 votes, for the Democrats.

Rell leads, 188-179.

Day 40: Feingold continues his recovery, winning Wisconsin strongly.

Feingold leads, 189-188.

Days 41+42: The weekend. Whilst campaigning in the South, Rell makes a comment to an aide that is picked up by a LA Times correspondent. Whilst partially inaudible, she clearly says in part of the comment "F-ing racist rednecks". Whilst her campaign claims at first that she did not make the comment, and later that it was relating to a group of Democratic protesters nearby, the damage is done. The comment was made in Louisiana on Staurday; she fled to Idaho for Sunday. Feingold spent Saturday in New Hampshire, and aimed to spend the rest of the weekend there, but flew to Louisiana to join Napolitano who had spent Saturday in Maryland to capitalise on the scandal. Bond spent his weekend in Indiana.

Day 43: Idaho votes. Despite the scandal, Rell still manages to win the state convincingly.

Rell leads, 192-189.

Day 44: The first real evidence of the public's view of the comment comes when Indiana votes. Feingold closes the gap significantly, but Rell still holds on by a few thousand votes.

Rell leads, 203-189.

Day 45: Louisiana votes and Rell gets massacred. The question on everyone's lips is just how much the scandal will affect the rest of the South, and GOP base states.

Rell leads, 203-198.

Day 46: Feingold is given a further ten electoral votes and the lead when Maryland supports him 60-40.

Feingold leads, 208-203.

Day 47: Feingold heads in to New Hampshire expecting to win, but leaves Shellshocked-there has been a massive pro-Rell swing in the Granite state, and she takes it.

Feingold leads, 208-207.

Days 48+49: The weekend. Despite expectations, Rell is still very much in the race-in fact, Feingold's lead of 1 EV last week stays intact, but not grown. The next week will prove difficult for her however-Tennessee, Washington, Massachusetts, Nebraska and South Carolina vote. She spends Saturday in South Carolina apologising, and Sunday in Washington, whilst Bond goes from Nebraska to Tennessee. Napolitano is in Washington both days, whilst Feingold is in Tennessee and then joins Rell in Washington for the second and final debate. Despite performing well in the debate, Rell doesn't get the win her campaign needed and it is judged as a tie.

(using real 2012 EVs)

Day 50: Nebraska votes overwhelmingly for Jodie Rell, in all CDs, as she takes the lead once more.

Rell leads 204-203.

Day 51: Massachustetts puts Feingold back in the lead, 55-43.

Feingold leads, 214-204.

Day 52: Tennessee votes, and Rell's southener comments hurt her particularly badly, losing the state by 5 points.

Feingold leads, 225-204.

Day 53: In Washington, her comments play better, and the result is the closest in  a long time, but Feingold holds on to take it with a strong showing in the Olympic Peninsula and the standard King buffer.

Feingold leads, 237-204.

Day 54: South Carolina votes strongly for Rell, even if the south seems to be rather unenthusiastic about her.

Feingold leads, 237-213.

Days 55+56: The weekend. Rell is still in damage control, but is slowly moving the election bacvk to the core issues. The problem is, Feingold is seen as being pretty strong all around. Rell campaigns in Ohio both days, as does Janet Napolitano, Bond splits his time between Montana and Ohio, and Feingold focussed on  Ohio on the Saturday and Mississippi on the Sunday.

Day 57: Vermont extends Feingold's margin.

Feingold leads 240-213.

Day 58: Mississippi votes, and polls show it being quite close. In the end, Rell takes it handily.

Feingold leads 240-219.

Day 59: Montana votes very strongly in Rell's favour.

Feingold leads 240-222.

Day 60: Ohio votes, and while it is close, the result is known by around 11 eastern: Feingold.

Feingold leads 258-222.

Day 61: Wyoming votes overwhelmingly for Rell.

Feingold leads 258-225.

Days 62+63: Rell and Bond both spend all weekend in Pennsylvania. Napolitano is in Colorado on both days, but Feingold also joins the Pennsylvania battle knowing that if he can win it, he wins the Presidency.

Day 54: President Rell wins in Kansas, 54-44.

Feingold leads, 258-231.

Day 55: Millions have tuned in to see the Pennsylvania results, and at the end of the night President Rell is leading, but it still remains to close to call.

Day 56: After 4 hours further counting, Pennsylvania is called for Rell, which makes today's vote in Colorado a must win for Feingold if he is to make it in to the White House. He wins it by 7,233 votes.

Feingold leads 267-251.

Day 57: Rell wins a strong victory in Alabama as it seems the south has forgiven her.

Feingold leads 267-260.

Day 58: Feingold had vague hopes of taking West Virginia, but whilst the turnout was a very high 77%, more Rell supporters went.

Feingold leads 267-265.

Days 59+60: The weekend. Nevada is invaded.

Result with one state left:

Day 61: After two months, the election comes to an end as Nevada votes. President Rell urges a safe pair of hands, stressing Feingold's leftism. Bond camps out in Reno, as Rell, Feingold, and Napolitano focus on Henderson County. Feingold's message is clear: The people of Nevada have the opportunity to bring real change to the far-away Washington.

His message fails, Rell wins by a strong 40000+ votes with a record-smashing 86% turnout.

Final Result:

President Rell is re-elected 271-267.
