If it's J.K. Rowling, I will personally murder 7 people, one for each of the Harry Potter books.

It won't be, her time has gone, she's not the novelty she once was, she's just a rich, famous author. If TIME was going to select her, it would have been in 2000 or 2001

Do you think this means that Time has it narrowed down to these people?   http://www.time.com/time/personoftheyear/2005/walkup/
Irish pride compelled me to vote for Bono.

I'm thinking Mother Nature, though I wonder if Terri Schiavo will get any consideration.

The better question is who cares? It's just eastern elitist libs deciding anyway.

Yeah, like last year when they made George W. Bush Man of the Year, and before in 2000... and they gave it to Rudy Giuliani in 2001... and to the American Soldier in 2003...

F#%^ing eastern elitist libs.

I wonder if Terri Schiavo will get any consideration.

I was thinking about that, too. If you really focus on one person who made a big impact on politics in this country this year, Schiavo has to be considered.

You are amazing, Gabu. J.K. Rowling is an evil person.

Could be Tom DeLay or Jack Abramoff.  Maybe it'll be Condi Rice.  Time might also do a Storm of the Year and put Katrina in there, or New Orleans as City of the Year.

I know you don't like Harry Potter, but isn't this taking it a little too far?

Do I really believe Rowling is evil? No. That was an obvious joke. But do I hate Harry Potter? Absolutely.

The Iraqi voter is actually starting to emerge as a serious contender to all the natural disaster doom&gloom.

Do you think they'll sell more copies if they put a distant foreign country on the cover or a bleak story about natural disasters? Neither of them seems to be a commercial smash.

I wouldn't be surprised if, for that reason, it's Bill Gates or some other prominent American.

I'm betting on Mother Nature, though that's kinda a lame pick.  Pope John Paul II or Bono would be much better.

iraqi voter = person of year => positive spin foe Bush admin re iraq.

iraqi voter = person of year => not possible.

I never thought about that and if you ask me, it's not impossible. I'm just going to wake up Sunday morning, find out that it's Mother Nature, buy the issue anyway and move on. It's such a stupid pick though.

Yeah, it's the easy way out. It's their job to pick a person, which makes for a much more interesting story than stuff that's already been on TIME's cover at least 5 times this year. If they pick Mother Nature, it'll just be repetitive, since they've already had tons of features on it throughout the year.

The Iraqi voter will not be it for the simple reason that people voting in Iraq is no different than people voting in all the other vast amounts of countries in the world with free elections.

Newsflash - Iraq was the center of attention this year and elections there are a bit different from those in countries like the U.S.

I disagree.  I'm not saying they will win, but that TIME is willing to pick them.  They have shown willing to look past their partisanship in the past when picking.

If they do pick them, they will spin it in the direction of them voting in spite of Bush's general ineptness.  They are not that non-partisan about this.

Rowling and Nature can't be considered a person. Who cares about Rick Warren? Steve Jobs had has employees create the iPod...in 2003... Bill Gates is just in there because he is rich. The Valerie Plame story is the most overdiscussed piece of "news" I've heard this year. Pope Benedict XVI...yeah, a guy was choosen by a bunch of guys chosen by a guy who he was a friend of to push an ultraconservative christian agenda.  The Google Guys...such an innovation! Without the Google Guys we would have to use *gasp* AskJeeves or Yahoo to find things. Bush and Rice... the incumbent man of the year and his bitch. That narrows down the playing field of decency in the finals bracket to Lance Armstrong and Bono. Bono has been quiet all year except for some pitiful U2 songs that brought my opinion of the man down.

What will get it: Mother Nature
Who on this list should get it: Lance Armstrong
Who not on this list should get it: Peter Jennings (or the few respectable reporters left in general), Iraqi Voters, or Pope John Paul II.

Bono & Bill and Melinda Gates as Persons of the Year

http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/12/18/time.poy/index.html?section=cnn_latest

Over 44% on time.com voted for Mother Nature....but of course, that wasn't liberal enough.
