Nothing about that part of California has ever attracted me.

Hell no. Weren't they supposed to be populist over there? Because that county went 55.5% for anti-union Prop 75.

The populist Hispanics don't vote.

But it historically has been very Democratic, voting Democrat from 1932 to 1976, with 1972 being the messed up year. When you have Reagan Democrats coupled with increasing suburbia, it doesn't bode well for the local Democrats.

No wonder Republicans like immigrant labor so much. Not only can they treat them like sh**t, but then the local area still votes right-wing, because they can't vote.

I'v been trying desperately to get Hispanics and Hmongs to participate much more in the political system, but many are not integrated and its been tough. My Spanish skills aren't up to much speed.

Fresno's City Council has 4 Democrats, 2 Republicans and 1 Independent conservative-right-winger; actually. The inner-suburbs, the city are Democratic and by fairly solid margins. The outer-burbs are very very GOP.

Its the unincorporated rural areas that helps the GOP here, and an unabashedly 'we originate from Okies' conservative township respectfully called Clovis.

I'll say that close to 95% of Democratic voters in Fresno are  poor and vote for economic reasons. Similar situation exists in Tulare and Madera counties, only those counties lack a Democratic-city proper.

As for prop voting, we voted for Prop 73 by a larger margin than Bush's victory.. which obviously leads a glance at that our Democrats have a populist-bent in thier voting streak.

Oddly, Cal Dooley and Jim Costa, congressmen of CA-20 are both more libertarian liberal Democrats as opposed to populist Democrats. Odd...

I'm not really a populist, but whatever - I would prefer to live in a town/city that I actually enjoy living in regardless of its politics.

A not so distant relative of mine (I think my mother's second or third cousin, not sure) was once Mayor of Fresno, after ending a acting career including staring as "Bubba" on the TV show In The Heat of The Night.

Your related to Alan Autry. He is a Republican, and is actually quite anti-Arnold, and has endorsed some Democrats for State Assembly I believe.

Oh.  Oddly I didn't connect "Freak Rethuglic" with "Free Republic," because I was thinking the second word was "Republican" for some reason.

I've spent a few weeks of summer at a friend's house in Fresno before. Too hot, not very interesting

I voted no but actually who knows. If I become a pharmacist I think I could live a better life in an area like Fresno or Modesto rather than in OC or the bay area.

Probably not.  My brother lives in Visalia and the weather is not my style.. though the relatively close proximity to the mountains is nice.  He can go up skiing for the day and still come home in the evening.

I visited him there once in 2005 and it was like 110˚F with a dewpoint in the upper 50s... so it actually felt like it.  Everything was dead and brown and the cows were all crammed underneath the open sheds in the middle of their grassless fields... I even saw a dust devil blowing around one of them...

It made me think.. those "happy cows come from Califoania" is such bullsh**t.  Sure, winters in Wisconsin are cold.. but their summers very good for natural grass growth and (get this) they can catch the shade under all the oak trees that love to grow in pastures.

That could pretty much be all of California, although central valley is obviously closer. The best place to live in the central valley(weatherwise) might be Sacramento since the delta is located to the west and they get the delta breeze on even the hottest days. So Sacramento is closer to 90 everyday in the summer rather than the 100-105 degree heat in Fresno and Bakersfield.

I wouldn't mind living there, if it weren't so darn expensive.  That goes for all of California.

Every couple years, I stay there a couple days when I visit my friend.  Stockton is better than Fresno, IMO.

Fresno is very different from what you think of when you think of California. So are the prices. Actually you would fit in well there, considering it is populated by your brethren.
