Report: al-Zarqawi killed by explosions in Mosul

At least one Arab television media outlet reported that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the head of the al-Qaida in Iraq, was killed in Iraq on Sunday afternoon when eight terrorists blew themselves up in the in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.

The unconfirmed report claimed that the explosions occurred after coalition forces surrounded the house in which al-Zarqawi was hiding.

Possibly huge news.

IF this is true, this is some of the best news to come out of Iraq for decades.
Need to be sure before celebrating...

Doing a Google News search of 'al-Zarqawi' leads you to no articles about his death.

Because Google victimizes conservatives.

This is the first time a Western news source has reported it.

No western news source has reported on this yet, but whether this is credible is not clear. It has been reported many times earlier this year that Osama had escaped into India, while in 2002 someone said that he was about to commit suicide.

What is credible (and certainly a blow for AQ) is that his family disowned him yesterday.

If that bastard is not dead I hope he will be soon.

Don't know if Zarqawi if dead, but do wonder that Bin Laden has been silent for quite a while.

Hmm.

Yes, these stories are getting very repetitive.

Hmm.

Who cares about him anyway? He's hiding somewhere in a cave in Afghanistan or Pakistan since 2001. Or maybe he's dead. Doesn't matter much.

Zarqawi is nowadays far more important/dangerous than Bin Laden. Ironically, Bin Laden's relevance for planning and conducting terrorist attacks started to diminish right after 9/11. Al Qaeda has extremely decentralized, with dozens of cells operating on their own with minimal to none communication between each other and with no central authority whatsoever. I would argue that it's actually incorrect and sort of anachronistic to still talk about "Al Qaeda". There's no Al Qaeda anymore.
Oh, well, there's this "Al Qaeda in Iraq"... a name most likely chosen by Zarqawi simply for "marketing" reasons.

Bin Laden is the past. Zarqawi, as leader of one of the most important Islamist terrorist cells in the post-Bin Laden world, is the present... well, maybe he's the past too if this report posted here is true.

Well, there's been no need for a new tape since he helped Bush win re-eelection last year with his carefully timed tape to influence the election.

I heard a similar report on CBS radio. Washington is describing the presence of al Zarqawi among the 8 dead insurgents as unlikely. The report also indicated that flesh and blood samples are being collected for DNA analysis in an attempt to identify the dead.
