No, not for anything.  How can one not love his own child?

Just because you disown your child doesn't mean you don't love them.  It means your so disappointed in them that, in order to save the sanity of yourself and your child, you let them go.  It's really complicated to explain why you would do it... but... yeah...

Let me put it this way - imagine that your child became exactly like opebo. In other words, an amoral ingrate who hopes you'll die soon so he/she will get an inheritance. Now, you might still love your child, but at that point about the best thing you can do for them is cut them off and disinherit them in the hopes that he/she will become a decent person.

Or, if they were gay.

That's equally as horrible.  You love them, but release them in hope that one day, they will turn hetero.

There is always the potential of turn around, and once you've disowned your child you can't undo that action.  Therefore, NO.

Well I'm pleased that you would no longer disown your child if he or she was gay. I know people who have been disowned for just that and what they go through during Christmas or during family crises is pretty heartbreaking Sad

I doubt I could forsee a situation where I would disown my own child. Fundie Christian is the only one that comes close and then (s)he would have to be really sanctomonious about it.

EDIT: Actually coming to think of it, I would disown my child if (s)he joined the IRA. But that's it I think.

...he/she grew up to be the following (check all that apply)

1. gay - No.  That is your private life - keep it private.
2. atheist - No
3. fundy christian - No. Just do not pressure your beliefs on me.
4. muslim - Questionable - Depending what factions they are leaning towards.
5. republican - No - That's a stupid reason.
6. democrat - No - See #5.
7. libertarian - No - See #5 again.  I would strongly encourage my child to go that way.
8. have an abortion - No, However, I would encourage her to take other measures and have an abortion as a last resort.
9. drug user - No. My goal as a parent would be to help my child seek some counciling to kill this habit.
10. neo-confederate - No. See #3.

To those who have a problem with issue #1, you may not agree with the lifestyle (I don't agree with the lifestyle either) but if it is the lifestyle that makes your child happy, you should support your child's happiness first.  In the end, what harm does your child being gay do?

I agree, I really don't know what I was thinking a year ago.
It's okay.  Your still young. I felt the same way when I was a freshman in college.  I feel as you grow up, you will learn more and become more tolerant.

Yeah, my opinions changed too (what a surprise).  I agree with Fezzy on this one.

It would be hard on me if my child were gay or Muslim, but I would get used to it after a while.  They'd still be my kid.

A child in a loving home would necessarily be a straight libertarian? Tongue
