Quite frankly, Jackson walked on water, at least in Washington.  He received 82% of the vote in his first election, against a viable Republican.  He continued to win landslides up until his final 69% victory in 1982.  Jackson never, in any of his elections, lost any of Washington's 39 counties.  The most conservative counties gave him some of his largest margins of victory, in fact.

I have a lot of respect for him, and he certainly would have received my vote - and probably would have totally dispatched Ford.

I think most of you are overestimating Jackson's support in the South.  He might a few states like Arkansas, Georgia, and Texas, but otherwise not many.  Look at 1972.  It was not just McGovern's fault that he lost the South so badly.  It was because National Democrats were  viewed unfavorably.  Carter won the South by such a large margin because was a "Southerner and an American and in that order."

He mightave taken Indiana actually; the state is very blue collar and at the time had one of the highest Union densities in the country (deindustrialisation hath since weakend this markedly). Possibly Michigan as well; the same factors apply and Ford only beat Carter there by 5pts.

jackson wins 441 to 97, perhaps I'm being a bit too optimistic? I wasn't sure how well he would do in the South or the Northeast. I know I'm pushing it with Alaska but oh well. Smiley

Jackson wasn't exactly a national democrat as we would classify it now.  He was certainly of the populist-leaning oldstyle democrat mold, and his hawkish stances would also garner support for him in the South.  Don't forget this is against Ford, who did well in suburban areas but collapsed in rural areas (especially Southern) and many cities.  I see no reason why the South, which parts of went for landslides for Carter, would swing all the way to Ford.
