Since elections now seem all but certain, and the only thing not known now is if they'll be on January 16 or 23.

Parties:
Conservative - main rightist party (duh). Created in 2003 with the merger of a bunch of right wing parties that I don't know much about.
Liberal - current governing party, despite the name it tends to now be more to the center and has some center-right factions. Paul Martin is on the right wing of the party.
New Democratic Party - main leftist party, although mostly on economics. I hear they do have a populist faction and are heavily tied into the religious left in some areas.
Bloc Québécois - Quebec seperatists. Lean left on other issues, with the exception of provincial rights

Parties not in parliament:

Greens- much different from the American Greens. Their leader is a former Conservative, and has been moving to the right on economics. Probably best summed up as socially liberal, and in favor of free markets in addition to environmental protection.
Canadian Action Party - Kind of a Pat Buchananist party. Very nationalist, anti-globalization and free trade.
Christian Heritage Party - Far far far right wing nuts, much like the Constitution Party. Just think theocracy.
Libertarian Party - Like the US Libertarians.
Marijuana Party - single issue party that wants to legalize Marijuana
Communist Party of Canada - One of Canada's two communist parties. The more "moderate" of the two
Communist Party of Canada (Marxist-Leninist) - I still have a hard time believing these guys are for real. They are unlike any party I've ever seen in any western democracy, they are self-described anti-revisionist (i.e. Stalinist) and promote the totalitarian regime of Enver Hoxha in Albania as their ideological role model. They also openly support North Korea, and even have a personality cult around their late founder.

As for me, I'd definately vote NDP. In the past I might have strategically voted Liberal, but now I would say f**k it, I'm too sick of Martin. Not to mention Martin going down would probably be better in the long term for the Canadian left, even if it means a Conservative government for now. Of course if I lived in a very safe riding I might vote CPC(M-L) just for kicks. Smiley

NDP; they run some real kooks in a lot of unwinnable urban ridings (something that they have really got to stopt doing; it damages the party's image. Better not to run a candidate at all than run a lunatic) and I wouldn't vote for that sort of candidate... but then again I wouldn't live in that sort of riding.
But on the other hand, the Social Gospel types out on the Prairies are great Smiley

Make that 3 for the NDP Cheesy

Although there is a small chance I might vote Conservative.

Would you vote CPC(M-L) over Liberal?

BTW, do you know anyone who votes for those guys (or the "moderate" commies)?

Is that if Ottawa South is very close and the oppertunity to claim bragging rights for beating a McGuinty is too good to miss? Wink

Sorry about that last post, I don't have a working mouse, and accidentally pressed enter when I shouldn't have.

Anyways, to answer your question, BRTD I do not no anyone who votes for the Commies, and I would hope to never have to be faced with them vs. the Liberals. It would all depend on the candidates, and there would always be that possibility I would vote for the over the Liberals.

I actually like Dalton, but I don't really like David McGuinty. The Conservative candidate is actually respectable, he was the whistleblower on the whole Gomery Inquirt mess. I don't know his positions on the issues though, so unless he is a moderate, I won't be voting for him.

The Canadian Alliance (formerly the Reform Party) and the Progressive Conservatives. The Canadian Alliance was strong in the west, and makes up a lot of the new party, and the PC was more moderate and was only strong in the Atlantic (although was historically Canada's 2nd biggest party). A lot of PCers left the new Conservative Party. Many joined the Liberals.

Ugh, Conservatives in all likelyhood, though I feel blessed that I'll never have to choose.

I feel blessed you will never have to choose to. People like you are what's wrong with America, and we don't need your types in Canada.

Greens.

The NDP is too economically socialistic, the Liberals are too corrupt, and the Conservatives are actually the All-Lie-Ance repackaged with a new label.

No Idea.

I'm essentially a Red Tory...and while Earl has said the greens would be a good fit...I'm not really big on the environment...granted...I'm not for slash and burn...but I'm not exactly "for" green policy (especially where it would dampen the economy)

I think you're basically a Liberal, you aren't too far off from Martin.

I chose Liberal, since I don't want Steven Harper to become PM, but I would certainly be open to voting NDP. As an American I have an aversion to third parties, an unfortunate side effect of our system.

I can't believe I'm the first person to vote Liberal Shocked

I'd rather have Harper as PM for awhile if it meant the decline of the Liberals and thus the rise of the NDP rather than put up with just more endless Martinite centrism that'll never be voted out.

If Paul Martin is insufficently left-wing then I'm more centrist than I thought Wink    I can just see Harper and Bush becoming buddies, Harper sending peace keepers to Iraq, etc.....

Conservative; It's time to change and i'd rather not have a minority government; otherwise it'd be NDP.

NDP. Usually I would consider a Liberal tactical vote in a Lib-Con or Lib-Bloc marginal where the NDP is without a chance, but probably not this time around.
