Absolutely not. The Soviet Union fell apart b/c totalitarian regimes never last and b/c of the Afghan War. Reagan only hastened the end in the minds of Republicans with his show business antics.

Not at all.  The hostages probably would have been returned from Iran as well.

No, but I disagree with your statement about the hostages.

The only difference that might've resulted from Carter instead of Reagan winning in 1980 is we might have a few more vestiges of a social safety net now.  Though it is quite probable that would've been destroyed since 1984 anyway.

no they wouldn't.  The USSR was doomed to fall with or without Reagan.

You'll love this quote.

"The defining event of the decade, might well be the breakup of the Soviet Union." - Senator Daniel Moynihan, 1980.

Moynihan was a good man.

Some of the proposals the radical dems came up with from 1981-1988 would have saved the Soviet Union.  There was talk of congress sending massive aid to keep them from suffering from Reagan's policies and, later, talk of aid to keep them from collapsing for fear of destabilizing the region.

They went nowhere and were never really popular outside the pro-Soviet radical left.  If they were ever actually enacted, it would have been a disaster for the US.

I'd rather have the Soviet Union survive in the form Gorbachev was pushing it toward than breakup considering what resulted. Most of those former Soviet republics are far worse off and less free, including Russia. And then look at Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan...those places would've been far more free in a Gorbacheved Soviet Union than they are now, and Russia definately would be despite being what it's like under Putin.

There would be no way to save it.  People complain about the government spending under Reagan now.  Imagine the hundreds of billions, if not trillions, would have to given by the US to keep the USSR solvent.  The country was too big to maintain the infrastructure, let alone encourage economic development, in it's form.  Breaking up was probably the best thing for all of them.  Smaller countries are easier to manage and maintain, and with their historical ties, economic trade between the countries would most likely have less barriers than if they were trading with outside countries.  And, let's not overlook how far these newly independent countries have come along.  Many of them have begun embracing democracy and signing free-trade agreements with non-Asian nations, allowing for more economic gain as well as economic aid.

Well the case was made above that the Democrats would've saved the Soviet Union.

I'd take Gorbachev over that worthless f'uck Putin any day of the week.

The world would be better off today if the USSR we still around, I'd say.

The situation there is a lot worse, and having two superpowers in a MAD Cold War ironically keeps things more peaceful around the world because neither side will do anything to set off the other.
