It means you are a hard-left socialist but don't generally advertise the fact.

Thats not true.

Jfern, for the most part the DLC (Democratic Leadership Council) is just a label.

John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, Al Gore, Bill Clinton,  Evan Bayh, Mark Warner, Martin O'Malley, Chuck Schumer - All DLC.

DLC democrats tend to be more pro-business.  DLC candidates support NAFTA, GATT, WTO.  The poster boy for DLC politics is probably Bill Clinton.

What the hell does it mean to be a DLC Democrat?

It's a Democrat who should really be a Republican. That's basically what it means.

DLC Democrats are often very centrist or even right-wing on economic issues.

Some DLC Democrats are good, some are bad. You have to look at each one individually.

Exactly.  Although Id argue that there are very few 'bad' DLC members.  For the most part they stand up for core democratic values.

Kerry - DLC
Gore - DLC
Bill Clinton - DLC
Chuck Schumer - DLC
Mark Warner - DLC
Even Bayh - DLC
John Edwards - DLC

The DLC is a very eclectic (sp?) group of people.  Some are left, others left of center, and others smack dad in the middle.

Gore, Schumer and Edwards are not members of the DLC. See list here:

http://www.dlc.org/new_dem_dir_action.cfm?viewAll=1

Some of the most prominent members include Evan Bayh, Tom Vilsack, Mark Warner, Hillary Clinton, Mark Pryor, Blanche Lincoln and Tom Carper.

Gore and Edwards were DLC.  They are no longer listed because you must hold elective office.

Here is a link to an Edwards speech at the DLC.

You maybe right about Schumer, but I know he's written articles for the DLC in the past.

Bottom line, they're all solid democrats.  They tend to be a little more centrist on economic issues, but for the most part they share the same goals as non-DLC members.

Funny, Obama demanded that his name be taken off the list. He did so poorly in that Senate race.

J.J. actually raises a good point here.  You may find that many of the people in the DLC who don't really belong there merely joined the group in order to feign a generally moderate position.  That kind of tactic would certainly be useful in a close election, in order to court swing voters and such.

However, that theory doesn't seem to apply in the case of Gavin Newsom, who I really can't figure out at all.

Becoming a member of the DLC was certainly a great way to find easy fundraising dollars, as they have had numerous corporate connections that other Democrats didn't have.

Obama is staying away from the DLC to keep his liberal image pure.  But as time passes Im convinced he'll join.  Especially if he has presidential aspirations.

No way. Many of the newer Democrats are steering clear of the DLC because DLC Democrats are often viewed as soft and wishy-washy. Obama and Schweitzer are two good examples of rising stars that refuse to be associated with the DLC.

What the hell does it mean to be a DLC Democrat?

The DLC is the Joe Lieberman wing of the Democratic party.

Al From is a partisan Republican pretending to be a Democrat.

False.

Kerry is DLC.  Obviously nowhere near Lieberman.

And Lieberman is a past chair and probably the most recognizable member.

And IMO Kerry is to close to Holy Joe especially on Iraq. =)
