No hindsight here, just your gut reaction.

EDIT: I've been playing the game 'Victoria' as the Confederacy and it's now 1901...

The United States. Secession was an unconstitutional act of rebellion.

The United States. Secession was an unconstitutional act of rebellion.

"...the powers of the federal government, as resulting from the compact, to which the states are parties; as limited by the plain sense and intention of the instrument constituting the compact; as no further valid that they are authorized by the grants enumerated in that compact; and that in case of a deliberate, palpable, and dangerous exercise of other powers, not granted by the said compact, the states who are parties thereto, have the right, and are in duty bound, to interpose for arresting the progress of the evil, and for maintaining within their respective limits, the authorities, rights and liberties appertaining to them."

Easily the United States.  This question is better for foreigners and those who lived in contested areas, because it's hard to support the confederacy in the north even if I wanted to.

Whatever Madison may have said, the plain text of the Constitution forbids secession. Secession violates the supremacy clause, as well as the idea of perpetual Union implicit in the Constitution.

Victoria: An Empire Under the Sun

It is a world simulation;war. trade, politisc, economics from 1836-1920. You can go any nation from the UK to Oman to African tribes. You get new nations forming, Scotland, Catalonia, South German Confederation. Very historically accurate and also allows you to have some 'alternate' history. Playing as the CSA is an option in the 1860 scenario.

http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy/victoria/review.html

It gets poor reviews but I love it.

Screenshot

Yes, they have pictures of Teddy and Robert E Lee, wrong timescale- but it's meant to be symbolic only.

The Prussians get stuck if you screw about with their alliances. Ive got Bavaria and the South as an Austrian puppet state.

I also got the UK involved in the Civil War over cotton trade which is why i've survived as the CSA to 1901.

I usually go an Italian state like Tuscany or Sardinia Piedmont just for fun.

Confederacy, although I would have been an abolitionist.  I know that may raise a few eyebrows, but slavery was not the main issue.  It was more about States' Rights and sovereignty of States over internal issues.  Some may disagree with my assertions, but that's just my opinion.

I agree with that.  I was taught that because the North became more industrial and the South became more agricultural, they grew apart and problems arose.  Slavery is just the most famous, although minor, cause.

I would support the Confederates, of course.  And I would give the man that killed Lincoln a medal.  I also support ending slavery, but state rights over federal rights any day.
