It will take some time to keep it under control but luckily it did not happen when the vacinity around it was busy.

Wow, Al, can you see that smoke from where you're at? That's a rather large plume of smoke.

Nope; a beautiful clear day up here Smiley

The smoke is the black stuff (not sure when they took this photo; I think early on. Not sure though)

And here's why:

Al,

That could be the smoke from the fire on the satellite photo.  Here is a ground photo from MSNBC:

Some of the video I've seen from the area looked liked the area had been hit by an artillery barrage.  I'm surprised that have been no deaths reported.

At 6 am, I was obviously out with the canaries, but my Aunt who was up says that she felt the explosion, in Crawley, and that it severely rattled her conservatory.

How far is Crawley?

Its about 50 miles. They are on opposite sides of London effectively.

Damn, though I've read that the Somme could be heard in Dover.  I'm stunned that no one was killed.

Crawley- the ultra-marginal seat Smiley A relative of mine felt it in Watford but it's only a few miles away so I'm not suprised.

A friend of mine lives in Hemel Hampstead, where it happened. She said she was awakened by a bright flash of light. She then noticed a rumbling and an almighty bang. She thought a nuke had been dropped, or that a plane had fallen from the sky. When she realised that this wasn't the case she made her way outside - all the windows had been smashed by the glass so she had to tread carefully. Outside, virtually everyone was outside to take a look, most of them still in their pyjamas (it was 6am after all).

Didn't see a cloud of smoke down here in Surrey Docks, though another friend said he saw it up in Southgate. I'm amazed no-one died.

Oh, I see. I live just off Redriff Road/Salter Road, if that rings a bell. You know, the one that sort of does a bend around the docks and goes in a semi-circle along the Thames.

How come you know the area?

Ah yes... that one. That's (more or less) the part of the area I know best actually... small world isn't it?
