No, blanket amnesty is essentially a way for a president to veto a law (without allowing Congress to override) an arbitrary time after the bill is signed into law.  It is a violation of the spirit of checks and balances, even if it is technically constitutional.

No, I think it was a mistake.  It showed disrespect to all who served in a war they were not allowed to win.

They were beaten by the Vietnamese, dazzleman.  Lets cool it with the self-serving excuses and give credit where credit is due.

Yes. The government was wrong to get involved in Vietnam and should never have sent US troops there.

Its suprising to me to see how the lessons of Vietnam have been so quickly forgotten.

Yes. The draft-dogers deserve to be commended for resisting slavery.

Agreed.  If the country can't win a war with volunteers than it is not a popular war worthy of losing American lives for.

Not to mention that the deferments were a joke.

dazzleman, you are such a sad case of hubris.. but of course a very typical American.

Surely you can at least admit that the Vietnamese were superior to the Americans, if not in firepower, at least in bravery, will, and determination?

I know it is hard to face the truth - console yourself with the knowledge that they were fighting a foreign invader in their homeland, and could be expected, under the circumstances, to show a bit of 'grit'.

No. Generally I disagree with conscription, but the law is the law and its not fair to send of hundreds of thousands of people that followed it and then totally absolve those that ran away. Yes, LBJ was taking orders from the Kremlin, but even still that's why the elective political process exists.

Now, if someone assassinated LBJ, though illegal I would praise such action as highly moral. But dodging the draft for one's own sake is not some kind of great moral act.

No -why reward these cowards for shirking military service and disobeying the law?  I don't give a damn how unpopular the war was or whether you think the draft was immoral -if you were called up under the draft, it was your duty as an American citizen to serve your country, no matter what you thought of either the war in Vietnam or the draft.  And there were legal avenues to avoid being sent over -namely by declaring yourself a conscientious objector.

I'm with Mr. Frodo.

I agree with it. My uncle, a Republican and Vietnam vet, was strongly opposed to the draft. Although he and I differed politically, his arguements rubbed off on me.

I am opposed to a draft in any way, shape, or form.

I can't believe I am the only Democrat here to disagree with Carter's amnesty of draft dodgers.

The day I take the advice of a pedophile apologist is the day this party dies.

If I believed the Democratic Party was unsalvageable, I would do so.  As it happens, I do not.

BTW, is there any particular reason why I should take the advice of a pedophile apologist who is a miserable excuse for a human being?

You're my favorite Democrat, Frodo!

See, Frodo, the fascists love you!  You belong with them, bigoted prude.

This isn't really a party thing. More of a personal thing. My uncle was a Republican, and he supported the pardon... He also went to Vietnam. He hated the draft with a passion.
