Testing... based on what A18 has said in his thread-starding posts on Virginia county swings and "trends," I think this only works for paying members.  Here are the swing maps, which I believe track the swings in the two party popular vote for President.

1888

1892

1896

1900

1904

1908

1912

1916

1920

1924

1928

1932

1936

1940

All the maps except the first come out for me, and I don't expect the first to come out because there aren't even state pages, including state popular vote data by county pages, for Presidential elections before 1892.  Just in case there is, or sometime in the future due to site enhancements becomes adequate information in the site for the first map I wrote an img code for to come out, I will keep the source code for the 1888-1892 map on this thread (you can see the code by clicking the quote button).

And here are the two-party swing maps from the interval 1940-44 on:

1940

1944

1948

1952

1956

1960

1964

1968

1972

1976

1980

1984

1988

1992

1996

2000

2004

Well, at least the 1952-1956 swing map here shows different western Virginia counties than the one for Maine. Smiley

Here are the two-party "trend" v. the nation county maps for Maine through the interval 1936-40.  Again, I believe this only works for paying members and that this measures trends v. the nation in the two-party popular vote for President.  And again, don't expect the first map to come out.

1888

I don't know what's with the 1952-1956 maps, but hey.

Apparently, in 1956, New Hampshire was the western part of Virginia.

Yeah, that probably has something to do with the fact that I adjusted the source code for the 1956 swing and trend maps from those of Virginia that A18 made.  Funny that the same alterations in the states FIPS code worked for every other year from 1896 on though.
