When he ran for Governor of New Jersey this year, did Corzine give up a good position in the Senate because he believes he can run for President in 2008? They mentioned on The Beltway Boys that he could well have ambitions.

Probably, Corzine is an impatient executive-type, he could not stand being only 1 of 100 in the Senate, and one with no influence at that.  Knowing that Senators are a dime a dozen as Presidential candiates, but Governors win, he gave up the Senate to run NJ for 4 yrs.  Theoretically he could jump into the 2008 Presidential race, but I think its more likely he'll do two terms in NJ and run in 2012.  Having spent $100 million on two NJ elections, he still has $400 Million or so to spend.

He wouldn't stand a chance. He seems like John Kerry without three purple hearts.

Speaking of spawns of Satan in governor mansions....

If Corzine is our nominee, I will most likely volunteer for whoever the Republican nominee is.

It isn't crazy to think that he's setting himself up for a Presidential run (NixonNow feels almost certain that this is why he ran for Governor) but he'd get crushed in the general.

Forget the general he’d get crushed in the primary – Sam Brownback is more credible candidate than this guy!

Well, yeah, but I hope for scenarios where someone like Corzine get to the general.   Smiley

I don't think he'd have any chance in a presidential election, but he'll make a fine governor for NJ.

Can someone explain why Republicans and some Democrats widely dislike Corzine? What is it that he's done? Hasn't he in some ways restored trust and fairness in New Jersey and is credible because he is not a Democratic machine candidate?

Well I suppose he's a notch above McGreevey and Torcelli in terms of the Democratic machinery/corruption, but he's certainly not a "restoring trust" candidate at all, especially when compared to some of the other state's Democrats, like Rob Andrews or Rush Holt.  He essentially bought himself a Senate seat and then shoved a hard-working, honest, decent acting Governor in Codey who is deeply concerned about New Jersey (enough to turn down a Senate seat) aside for his own personal ambition.

I'd like to see him try so he'd fail horribly.

I'd normally like to see that too, but NJ's not in any position to goof around and prove points anymore.  We're really in the crapper...

I meant fail horribly in winning the nomination not in running the state. I never want a state to get screwed over!

Think about this: he is independently rich, and the NJ Dem's machine is so far up his butt that he appointed Menendez to his seat.

Think about that-- Menendez.

Then maybe we should support Corzine for the 2012 Dem nomination! Wink
