Likely scenario.  I mean if he beat Mondale by this much, how would Carter stand (especially considering Carter's prior presidential record)

The scenario:

In 1976, Jimmy Carter was elected Vice-President on a ticket with Senator Birch Bayh of Indiana. After a difficult first term, Ronald Reagan is elected President in a close race over President Bayh. In 1984 former Vice-President Carter wins the Democratic nomination and choses Senator Daneil Patrick Moynihan as his running-mate.

Ronald Reagan/George Bush (R): 440 Electoral Votes

Jimmy Carter/Daniel P. Moynihan (D): 98 Electoral Votes

No, I meant if everything else was the same, but Carter got the nomination again in 1984.

How does the South play out?

If Carter had never been President before he would have performed better than some suggest, particularly in the South where he ran many states fairly close even in 1980.

Carter, who would do better than Mondale (though that's not saying anything)

Ronald Reagan

It's hard to imagine too many people really doing well against Reagan in 1984.  I guess Carter might have done better had he not been already tagged a failed president, but I still don't see him coming anywhere close to winning.

I'd stay home. Neither candidate really holds much for me.

I'd have half-heartedly supported Mondale, so in all likelihood Carter

The only question is, who carries Georgia?  It could be Reagan, 435, Carter 3.  He was seen as a bigger failure in 1984 than even 1980.

Reagan, he would of had a shot to sweep all the real electoral votes, but the abomination of DC would of still gone to Carter

The Carter campaign is in sheer joy when, at 10:00 PM, Washington DC is called for their guy making the race...

535-2, Reagan  Smiley

Note that one of the DC electors abstianed in protest of DC's lack of Congressional representation.

Carter. Reagan is the worst president of all time as far as I'm concerned.

Thank god for the write-in line...

Honestly, with the exception of Lloyd Bentsen's candidacy for the vice-presidency in 88', the 80s gave the worst slew of candidates to date. Replacing Mondale with Carter would be like replacing Hitler with Franco...no significant difference.

Reagan/Bush - 54% - 509 EVs
Carter/Mondale (I assume this is the VP) - 45% - 29 EVs

My thoughts exactly. Carter was the worst president since Hoover and has gotten worse since he has left office.

Why would anyone think Carter would have even the remotest chance against Reagan in 1984?

Carter would win DC, and MAYBE Georgia, and I'm being generous to Carter with Georgia.

Carter proved he was not a leader, and was one of America's truly failed Presidents.

EV 535-2

Even one of the DC electors refuses to vote for Carter.

Is there no mercy?

How could things possibly get any worse for the hapless, inept Jimmy?

I wouldn't bother standing out in the Texas heat to vote in an election that would be an obvious landslide.

I'll give Jimmy Georgia, DC, Rhode Island, and Massachucettes. I think I am being kind.

I think there would only be two or possibly three Dems who would have a shot to defeat Reagan. Ted Kennedy was not as old, and still a charismatic Kennedy, but Chappaquidick kills him off.

Morris Udall, blessed with a gifted sense of humor and elongated build, which allows favorable comparisons to Abraham Lincoln, probably lacked the cash to beat Reagan, but he could've made the campaign extremely interesting.

Finally, Gary Hart was young, charismatic, and intelligent. We hadn't heard of Donna Rice, and he had an anti-establishment look. Hart could not out delegate Mondale in the primaries which is a shame, as he looked to have been the one able to defeat Reagan.

Either way America loses, but to be a partisan hack, Jimmy Carter.
