18 ties in with the general concept of suffrage, wherein one is considered a legal adult (though there are a few exceptions). I don't think the voting age should be separated from the age of suffrage in general.

Can someone explain to me why the voting age should be higher than 18? Unless we completely change our culture so that 21 is the new 18 in terms of legal rights, why should someone be an adult in every respect, but not be able to vote?

Because they might vote Democrat.  Can't have that.

Er...we should perhaps increase the legal age for that too, but, yeah, I think it's reasonable to award people the right to mess up their own lives BEFORE giving them the right to mess up other people's lives. Is that so strange?

People have the right and ability to mess up their own lives well before they turn 18. In fact, most people who have messed up their lives likely had the bad seed planted in them well before they turned 18. Quitting/flunking school, getting addicted to drugs, having a kid while in high school, all will severely hamper a person for the rest of their lives, and people do those things before they turn 18.

Doesn't really change the point...being allowed to get drunk is about messing your own life up. Obviously, you're allowed to do other things that can mess your life up befor eyuo're 18 as well, but it doesn't mean we should lower the voting-age does it? Tongue

Even though it sucked that I was only a few weeks away from voting this past election, 18 is definitely a good age in which to vote.
