Eugene McCarthy pulls off the upset in 1968 and wins the nomination.

How badly does he lose?

Richard Nixon/Spiro Agnew (R): 374 Electoral Votes

Eugene McCarthy/George Smathers (D):118 Electoral Votes

George Wallace/Curtis LeMay (AI): 46 lectoral Votes

McCarthy chooses popular moderate Senator George Smathers of Florida as his running-mate. This is not enough to offset the attacks of him being the candidate of "acid, amnesty, and abortion", as the Nixon Campaign is slyly able to paint him.

Nixon/Nixon -and Eugene McCarthy would lose by an even larger margin than Humphrey as there would be too many blue-collar Democrats voting for Nixon or Wallace for McCarthy to gain any traction except among college students.

Wallace/Nixon

Look for Wallace to do insanely well among blue collar Democrats and in the south.

I vote for Wallace.

Nixon would win.

McCarthy would have come third. As I've said before, there was more to Wallace's '68 run than bashing blacks and hippies. Democrats were very lucky to have the sort of candidate they did in real life actually...
