I don't have any preference, seeing that I know many people who belong to both categories.

Option 2, obviously.  We don't need two economically libertarian parties defending the plutocratic interests of either Country Club Republicans or Limousine Liberals.

The Republican Party is not economically libertarian (just as the Democratic Party is not socially libertarian).

The Republican party is economically plutocratic.  It doesn't support big government or small government, just any kind of government that fattens the pockets of the rich.

But I most definitly agree with your core point, Frodo!

Social Liberal and Economic conservative

It is sad that you are still pretending to be an economic conservative.

It should!  The end result of social conservatism, carried to its logical extreme, puts you in the gas chambers or with your head lopped off.  Nazi Germany and Saudi Arabia exemplify the socially conservative State.

The problem I have with social conservatism is that the rhetoric used makes me feel unease; it suddenly becomes 'moralist' and often tried to enforce ideal 'norms' on society. The gay community are often the first to feel the heat when social conservatism is on the rise because they are deemed as 'not normal' or operating outside soicety or outside the family unit. Next it's single parents and divorcees and other family units that do not fit the 'mum, dad 2.4 kids' label.

Conservatism should NOT lead to the supression of anyone, yet social conservatism can do even in it's moderate forms. The very a politician says 'we must protect the family' I usually switch off because I know he will almost exlusively mean the nuclear family and that does a great disservice to single mums and dads who work damn hard for their kids in adverse circumstances.

Depends on the extremes it's taken to. I want moderately liberal social positions and essentially centrist economic positinos. I guess I will go with social conservative/economic left, because I'm currently in a somewhat anti-libertarian mode...

Option 1, though it took a while to decide. Gotta side with freedom.
