Humala Has Four-Point Advantage in Peru

March 24, 2006

(Angus Reid Global Scan) – Ollanta Humala heads to next month’s presidential election in Peru as the frontrunner, according to a poll by UNI. 28.8 per cent of respondents would vote for the Peruvian Nationalist Party (PNP) candidate in the first round.

Lourdes Flores Nano of the Popular Christian Party (PPC) is second with 24.8 per cent, followed by former president Alan García of the American Revolutionary People’s Alliance (APRA) with 16.3 per cent, former head of state Valentín Paniagua of Popular Action (AP) with 5.3 per cent, and Martha Chávez of New Majority (NM) with 3.8 per cent.

The presidential election is scheduled for Apr. 9. If no candidate garners more than 50 per cent of all cast ballots, a run-off will take place on May 7.

I suppose I am a little out of the loop here, but did the elections in Peru already take place, and if so what were the results?  Who won?

Humala Gains on Garcia in Peru Presidential Poll, Apoyo Says

May 29 (Bloomberg) -- Peruvian Nationalist candidate Ollanta Humala gained on frontrunner Alan Garcia in an opinion poll ahead of the country's June 4 presidential run-off vote.

Backing for Garcia slipped to 55 percent from 56 percent a week ago, while Humala rose to 45 percent from 43 percent, Lima- based polling firm Apoyo Opinion y Mercado said in an e-mail statement. The May 23-26 nationwide poll of 2,000 registered voters, which is based on valid votes, has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.2 percentage points.

Moderate leads Peru presidential election

By MONTE HAYES
ASSOCIATED PRESS WRITER

LIMA, Peru -- A sampling of ballots showed moderate leftist Alan Garcia leading fiery nationalist Ollanta Humala Sunday in a presidential runoff deciding whether Peru tilts into Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez's orbit or maintains free-market policies.

The Apoyo polling firm said that a statistical projection based on a sampling of ballots nationwide gave Garcia 52.9 percent of the vote compared to 47.1 percent for Humala. The sampling had a margin of error of about 1 percentage point, the firm said.

Two exit polls issued when voting ended also gave Garcia the lead, though pollsters cautioned that some people might be hesitant to reveal they had voted for Humala because of heavy criticism of him in the media.
