We should make allowance for democrats in inhospitable territory. The fact that die hard GOP states like the Dakota's and Nebraska send Dem Senators to DC is a near miracle. Therefore they should be accorded some "room".

So Nelson, Dorgan, Conrad can vote Yes for Alito and i wont have any complaints.

Landrieu can also vote Yes as she has had her state ripped up and chewed out and has hardly anybody left to support her.

But anyone else. Pryor, Lincoln, Bayh, Bingaman NO WAY.

Now if Lieberman votes Yes then i think the dems need to do something about it. So its time to put pressure on him.

Lieberman, Joseph I.- (D - CT)

Please do something about it.  Tell him to switch parties and join the top of the ballot with the most popular Governor in America.  That'll really show us.

If Alito is confirmed, the SCOTUS will be firmly in the hands of far right extremists for generations. Only spineless politicians will vote yes on his confirmation. The Democrats must filibuster this nomination.

Man, you are all sounding like babies lately.  You seem to think that this is some sort of party right to have a liberal Supreme Court.  How do you think the GOP feels?  Where does it give you the right to demand Liberalism and deny the GOP Conservatism?  The problem is . . . you are all wrong (on both sides of the aisle), and so is the hearing process these days.  The court should be neutral, not left or right.  The court should be able to hear the cases brought before them, and weigh them against the laws of the land, and not in favor of the latest cultural trend.  Keep your politics in your Legislature and Executive branches, and out of the Judicial.

Only spineless politicians will vote yes on his confirmation.

A perfect example of what I'm talking about.

Um, there will be an equal number of conservatives (Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, Alito) and liberals (Ginsburg, Breyer, Stevens, Souter) until someone retires.

Kennedy, the swing vote, leans liberal.

If you think Kennedy is far-right, you are a joke. Scalia is almost 70.

Basically, 5 people who accept American law - some liberal, some conservative - and 4 who don't, three of them young.

No, four who hate the Constitution (Ginsburg, Breyer, Stevens, Souter), one person who only dislikes the Constitution (Kennedy), and four who actually support most of it (Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, Alito).

Okay, five people who like America and hate the constitution vs four people who like the constitution but hate America. Deal? Smiley

Posting 3 times in a row, each time making less sense than the previous, is a great way to introduce yourself.

And I wouldn't mind Liebermann switching parties, but the left-democrats need to understand that just because a person isn't as left as them, doesn't make them 'right.'

geez.

And the dem party's been shifting right over the last 15 years? gimme a break.

The court is already controled by partisan Republican election stealers. We're merely trying to prevent lying activist right-wingers from controlling it.

Believe it or not (from what I've read), it looks likely that Lieberman will vote against Alito.

Actually only Ginsburg and Stevens could be described by any stretch of the imagination as 'liberal'.  Breyer and Souter are moderates, Kennedy is a right-winger, though not far right, and Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, and Alito are extremists.

I think that is to be left up to the good people of Connecticut.  If democrats there dislike his actions, they are free to oppose him in the primary, and anyone who considers such a move unacceptable can make a different choice in the next general election.

C'mon - this is how the GOP lost Jeffords.  Whatever happened to the idea of Senators representing their state and constituents first, with partisanship mostly limited to choosing the committee chairships?

Yes, the GOP and Dems NEVER battled before that evil bastard Bush. It was all a happy lala land with lolipops and candy whistles and all sides got along on every issue.

What leads you to that conclusion? If Alito is confirmed, there will be four leftists, four rightists, and one moderate on the Supreme Court. One of those rightists (Scalia) is a septuagenarian, and another (Roberts) is fairly moderate.

Quite true. The Republicans have moved to the far right, and the Democrats have followed their lead and moved rightward as well.
