Potential Benefits of School Uniforms

    * Preventing gang colors, etc. in schools
    * Decreasing violence and theft because of clothing and shoes
    * Instilling discipline among students
    * Reducing need for administrators and teachers to be 'clothes police' (for example, determining whether shorts are too short, etc.)
    * Reducing distractions for students
    * Instilling a sense of community
    * Helping schools recognize those who do not belong on campus

Potential problems of School Uniforms

    * Students and parents argue that uniforms violate their freedom of expression (see below for more about what the Supreme Court has to say on this)
    * Parents raise concerns about the cost
    * Families fear it might interfere with religious clothing like yarmulkes

Hell no! uniforms are terrible. They have no upside and cause a loss of individuality.

It should be up to local school boards, but if I had a vote I'd say no.

Strongly oppose school uniforms, especially at public schools, because they interfere with individuality and freedom of expression.

It depends. If they're like uniforms from Star Trek II or Star Trek First Contact, then yes, strongly support!! Smiley Otherwise, no. Tongue

I support them. I wore the whole hog- blazer, braiding, badges and tie! Most British schools still have them, and thos who had a lax policy on them have returned to them with strong support from their parents.

You know it's an NPOV list when nouns are contrasted with verbs.

Preventing
Decreasing
Instilling
Reducing

vs.

Students
Parents
Families

I don't like being manipulated.

I don't care, it doesn't really matter to me what I wear to school. It should be up to the schools anyway.

You think Jake is fake?  Why in the world?

School uniforms have their uses.  However, some schools just don't need them.  There being economic benefits is ridicuclous - people just buy designer lines of whatever clothing is allowed.

In my school, the school colours were red, white, and blue.  They claimed it instilled patriotism.  Laughable.

I always like the fact that France's flag is red, white, and blue.  In fact, it's more prominently red, white, and blue than the American flag is.

Maybe your school wants to instill French patriotism?

Required?  No.

Allowed?  Yes.

It should be up to the school district whether to require uniforms or not.  Some schools benefit greatly from having students wear uniforms, while others don't need them.

NO NO NO

Having them in high schools is bad enough, but the thought of me having to wear one is horrific! I also doubt you'd find a single professor at my university who'd favor this.

No (normal). Also, they should be banned in public schools. They're unnecessary and expensive.

School uniforms are fascist.

The Bill of Rights contains rights that are given to us by nature indeed. We are commanded to have the courage to keep these rights. Nature is not mocked!

^^^^^^ Though I had to abide by a dress code in high school.  I didn't really mind it at the time.  It was actually fun to find ways to undermine it.
