I would much rather see the Department of Commerce stay in place. I don't think expanding the jurisdiction (Patent and Trademark office, National Institute of Standards andTechnology) of a secretary (in this case, myself as Sec. of the Treasury) is such a good idea.

If we keep the Department of Commerce, should it at least have a secretary, or be turned into a subdepartment of one of the existing Departments (that have a secretary)?

Why not? You will not obtain any real additional powers.

And the Dept. of Commerce is already a sub-department under the Secretary of Treasury as far as I can remember.

Ah, phooey, I withdraw the bill, unless someone wants do to something with it.

Do you still wish to withdraw?

Since there is no clarification from the Senator, the bill will be considered withdrawn unless someone objects or wishes to take over as sponsor.

Very well.  I would then once again recommend the following amendment, if someone would be willing to sponsor:

The name of the bill is changed to "Minority Business Development Agency Abolition Bill" and the text of the bill is stricken and replaced with
1. The Minority Business Development Agency is hereby abolished.
2. Any laws relating to the Minority Business Development Agency are repealed.

Um, Ebowed, you did see that I said I'd sponsor the bill, didn't you?

Anyway, I can see that the Minority Business Development Agency is something we can definitely cut, but what else can go?

Now, don’t yell at me or anything, I’m just trying to figure out what we can do, so if this is a really, really stupid idea, just tell me:  Is there any chance that we could, say, privatize the NOAA to like a whole bunch of weather stations and such that would be willing to own a share?  Just wondering…

What about the Tech. Administration?  I don’t know too much about it, but why exactly should the Government be concerned about the future of technology?  Or is that technology for military purposes?  Now, again, not suggesting anything really, just asking.  So I’d appreciate it if you wouldn’t get upset with me, and please just answer my questions.

Just as an FYI, back in the budget thread I included those agencies and departments that were to be cut and programs and moneys to be added.

This, plus the bills passed during this present Session (for FY 2007, excepting the Katrina bill) total what has been done.

Yes, Jake is sponsoring the amendment, not the bill.

I see no point in reassigning the offices. The Treasury doesn't need to be anymore bloated than it already is.

It has come to my attention that these specific areas already fall under the Treasury and would contribute even more so to the bloated department. I have a better understanding of this cause now but I'm still wary. I think this would send a troubling signal in times of economic uncertainty. I think the Senate should hold off on this.

Well, currently it only looks like we're gonna abolish the Minority Business Development Agency, but that depends on if anyone ever answers this post.
