In September, 1968, Republican nominee Richard Nixon falls gravely ill, and is forced to withdraw from the Presidential election.
The Republicans, in need of a candidate quickly, ask Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York to be the Presidential candidate. Rockefeller accepts, and becomes the GOP nominee on September 15. Rockefeller drops Spiro Agnew as the Vice Presidential nominee, and replaces him with his friend, Governor George Romney of Michigan.
The Democrats have nominated Vice President Humbert Humphrey of Minnesota for President and Senator Edmund Muskie of Maine for Vice President. They have been campaigning since August.
How does this election turn out, given the fact the Republicans have had to replace their presidential nominee in mid September?
