He got into a car accident, and couldn't show up for the vote. He's currently hospitalized.

Well, that is small consolation.

Wait, where is that religious from?  I thought that a senator from a candidate's home-state could more or less 'blacklist' him.. or was that just for the lower federal judiciary?

Yes, that is the tradition when a Democrat has nominated someone.

No, "senatorial courtesy" only applies when the home state senator and the President belong to the same party (whether Republican or Democrat).

No, you lying Republican. They even blocked several of Clinton's nominees from ever getting a vote who had the support of BOTH of their home state Senators. You are a lying hypocrite.

So? Plenty of Clinton's nominees with the support of both Senators were blocked, and plenty of Bush's nominees with the support of neither Senators were confirmed.

He was simply explaining that senatorial courtesy only applies when the senators and president are of the same party, and so opposition of both senators is irrelevant in this case.

Um, senatorial courtesy applies only if a home state senator of the President's party wants to reject the nomination. It does not apply if the home state senator supports the nomination.

Otherwise, everyone would have voted for Clarence Thomas, simply on the grounds that both Georgia Senators voted for him.

It looks like Bayh was the only Senator from a Bush state to vote against cloture.

He voted against Roberts (despite introducing him at a press conference)(!), and now he votes against Alito and for a filibuster.

He's running for president!

Interestingly the only Senators to explictly vote against cloture from Bush states were Minority Leader Reid from his purplish state, and Senator Bayh from decidedly red Indiana.

The Blue state spineless are Inouye, Akaka, Cantwell, Kohl, Lieberman, and Carper.
