Probably the most talked about of the big three in 2006, the soccer/football world cup will be held in Germany. With 32 countries from every continent competing, it will be the third in the trio, and probably gain the most coverage, so even though it is a few months off yet, it might as well have a thread now-discussion will certainly occur anyway.

(BTW, that's easily the worst logo of the three, I reckon Wink))

Presumably, he means the other two things he's made topics for: the Commonwealth Games and the Winter Olympics.

Yes, the sporting big three. I should have made it more clear.

Wait a second, it was perfectly clear. Sily sausage eater. Smiley

Only after I saw the other two threads.

Well, okay, Torino I could guess at ... but I hadn't a clue what the other one was. It#s not as if the Commonwealth Games were ever mentioned in the press of countries not in the Commonwealth. (Well, I don't know about America. But they're sure not well known at all in continental Europe.)

Oh, and I agree about the logo. In fact most people in Germany do.

It might not be covered in Gemany or the US, but considering the large amount of Commonwealthians on these forums, and the fact that (mainly thanks to India) a quarter of the world's population live in the Commonwealth, I think it's fair to say it's a pretty big event. It's as important, if not moreso, then the winter olympics. Some would say it's more important then the world cup-but they are mainly Indians, Pakistanis Australians, New Zelanders, Sri Lankans...unle4ss you are talking about the Cricket world cup, of course Wink

It could be worse, you could be from a country that used to be among the highest not going to the world cup less than a year ago, but is now plummeting down the rankings and have weak future prospects. Angry

Or a country that hasn't been there in thirty years and is lucky to be there this time...

I figure I'll give this a bump as the World Cup is about 2 weeks away now. I hope that the scandal engulfing Italian soccer (or should I say, football) right now will distract Italy, but I doubt it will do too much to distract the team.

The real event is the Women's World Cup where Canada will actually be participating in Wink

Anyways, I think I will cheer for England and Germany as that's where my ancestry lies.

Yes, and I tell you that I'm pretty sad that only one scandinavian team participates this year. I like the nordic way of playing football, especially the Danish.

Is picking people not even old enough to vote or get (legally) drunk yet and who has never actually played for the upper-division club that he's a member of, a good idea?
Not that I have a particular player in a particular team in mind or anything.
