Ack, it's weird voting for the (R) option, but if they want it, they should have it.

I'm torn, so I voted no.  Puerto Rico could potentially become a state, but how will it perform financially?  They would need a lot of local reform in order to become more stable (in relationship to the other 50 states).

I'd rather not have the US induct a state whose per capita GDP is significantly less than Mississippi and whose unemployment is almost three times the US average.

I couldn't care less, but I certainly wouldn't get involved with this mess if I were them.

No, for a couple of reasons.

First, only a small minority of Puerto Ricans even want statehood, from what I understand.  I believe the vast majority want to remain a commonwealth.

Second, Puerto Rico speaks a foreign language.  I know what a divisive force language can be, and how the lack of a common language makes mutual understanding difficult.

From the last two times the question was put to a vote, there is a large minority that wants statehood, a small majority that want to keep things as they are, the group with a small minority is the people who want independence.

Yes, because Puerto Ricans are the most Democratic-voting bloc of Hispanics. That's the only reason why. If they were like Cubans I'd strongly oppose it.

The last vote was close Something like 50.2% to stay a commonwealth, 49.7% for statehood and .1% for independence.  (I know those numbers are wrong but they're close and around what it was)

Actually the last vote, which was in 1998, had these results:

Status Quo: 50.3%
Statehood: 46.5%
Independence: 2.5%

I'm against it, because 50 is a good round number. Actually, what benefit does th US get with the annexation of Peurto Rico?

Tax revenue is all I can think of (which is actually not true, since we'd be spending more in tax dollars to keep the new state afloat).

Sounds fair.  They get Cuba we get PR. =)
