Result should be fairly soon apparently. I have to admit that I still can't bring myself to care about it either way.
Vote is expected to be close. Earlier today a compromise thingy (that would require further legislation before ID cards become complusory) passed without a vote.
Oh and once again, the P.M will not be voting. He's got a better excuse than last time though; he's stuck in South Africa because his plane's engine wasn't working.

Is this using an existing ID, such as a drivers license or is the bill going to authorize a whole new set of voting IDs?

So far the votes haven't been close at all: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4707608.stm

Based on the poll at that website, 3/4 of the people think it will not make the UK safer.

Yes, but straw polls on BBC sites don't tend to be that reflective of the population as a whole Wink
IIRC opinion polls show some pretty mixed messages. O/c most people don't really care either way.

I don't disagree with them but I object to the cost

While I support them in principle. I think the government is doing a poor job of 'selling' ID cards to the people. Going on about terror isn't going to sway people as terrorism won't be halted by ID cards, the July bombers would still have carried out their attack even if they were carrying ID cards as they were British citizens.

They could be beneficial in cracking down on benefit fraud, but even that is debatable.
