It seems odd. Peter said that most of the non-Blairite leftist in Labour are more populists rather than the radical-leftist types Americans would expect. She obviously wouldn't be a Tory, and is too far left for the Lib Dems. So what party would she and her ilk be in?

People like Boxer don't get elected to anything over here; the Radical Left is pretty much dead. In Scotland she'd be SSP (I think) but they're getting close to death as well.
It's possible that she might have started out in the radical Left back in the '80's and turned sharply centre-ward since then (ala "Red" Dawn Primarolo... or Margaret "Hoxha" Hodge Wink), she's been in elected politics long enough to make that possible.

I'd agree. If she hadn't mellowed while in office she would be kicking around a socialist fringe party or 'Respect.' Or be a public speaker and reality TV show media whore Smiley

Barbara Boxer?  She's a moderate center-leftist.  She'd fit just fine with Liberal Democrats or Labour.

Wrong, your extreme view on what is liberal and what is conservative does not apply to real life, shes very left, SSP or Respect would fit her well

No, she's a moderate center leftist.  Certainly if you are referring to British politics she would be considered quite the moderate there.

Man, don't do this to yet another section of the board.  You have already taken over "individual politics" with your assinine Opinion OF Joe Blow threads.  Are you going to take over this one with a profusion of What Party Would Joe Blow Belong To In CountryX?  It is not amusing.

BECAUSE IT'S A RIDICULOUS QUESTION
.

BARBARA BOXER IS NOT AN ENGLISHMAN

I MIGHT HAVE MORE AMUSEMENT IF HIS PEURILE QUESTIONS IN THE OTHER THREAD HADN'T RESULTED IN A TOTAL FAD IN WHICH IT WAS TAKEN OVER, BUT OBVIOUSLY IT WAS.

IT IS A NONSTARTER.  DON'T PLAY HIS GAME.  DON'T RUIN THIS BOARD.

It is a very valid question...  Asking questions like that is how you gain a better understanding of the global political situation.

Am I overreacting?

Do you people like what Individual Politics has turned into?

Seriously, if you do, then we are on completely different frequencies about this board.  I think it is a serious forum, not a frivolous one.

That's better, I pretty much agree with you that alot of these type of questions are quite pointless, though I found this one to be valid (i.e. she has not been dead for 100 years or is not a dictator or some cannibal, etc...)

The whole reason I asked this was simply because I was wondering how British politics work if the far left of the Democrats don't really fit in any of the main parties.

In the first place, please do not fall for the ridiculous claims of the right wingers on the board, such as Al, TN, and angus, that someone like Barbara Boxer is a 'far leftists'.

Also do not worry about 'ruining' this 'serious' board.  It isn't serious, obviously, and any way yours was a good question - it obviously exposed the fact that right wingers are indefatigably trying to define moderates as 'leftists'.

But she's AN AMERICAN.  She's a yankee doodle dandee.  It is an unanswerable question.  In any superposition of the wavefunction in which she is an English person, all bets are off!  In that version, you too may be an english person, or a mountain goat in Bulgaria, or a bacterium on the ass of a flea on the ass of a dog.  In such a version of the universe the parties of the UK, as you know them, may not even exist.  In such a superposition of states, this forum might not even exist, and the USA may exist only as a rebel colony of France, Spain, or the UK.  Or of Nigeria.  Or of Botswana.  Who's to say?  It's an invalid question.  It cannot possibly be answered!  Also, it's a shallow question.  It has no particular relevance.  It doesn't matter to anyone or anything what the answer to the question is, or even if there is one.  And worst of all, it will start a spam of this board like the one started in Individual Politics.  You know how these copycat threadstarters are.  There's a dearth of originality, and once a fad gets going, suddenly the first five or six pages of a board is filled with the same question, where only the direct object or subject is changed!  You have seen this before, if you allow it, you will see it again.  I am not a fan of censure as you know.  I do not support the criminalization of prostitution, drugs, etc.  But I have to draw the line somewhere.  This sort of question has the potential to start the same sort of trend that was started elsewhere.

Clearly I am the only one who foresees this possibility and I am the only poster who challenges not only the validity of the question, but who also has the balls to call on it.  Either I am seriously deluded, or you're all misguided.  Either way, whether it's a discussion which is unintelligent by design, or whether I'm not intelligent enough to notice its relevance, I have nothing intelligent to add to this discussion.   fine, I'll end my rant.  I won't ffck up your thread with any more of my bitching.

I didn't start the FF/HP threads, nor did I start by far the two worst copycat trends, the flag polls and pronounciation threads. The only real trend I've ever started is opebo vs. ___________ what ifs, and we have a whole forum for those now.

No, it isn't like a mountain goat or a flea.  In fact an Englishman and an American are pretty much the same thing, other than a little silly cultural window dressing.  They're both humans who create political institutions, even very similar ones.

I think it is actually a fairly astute question because of the issue of exclusion of actual 'leftists' from elected office in both countries, and the different mechanisms by which this occurs.  BRTD's question asks for a comparative examination of two nation's political situations, which is precisely what one would expect in International General Discussion.
