I will always base my vote on the premise that the president has the right to nominate those with whom he is ideologically and politically in agreement, as long as he or she is qualified for the position that they are being nominated for.

So I will once again be the stinker of my party, and say that I would have voted to confirm John Ashcroft as Attorney General.

As for this poll, I don't know enough about Ashcroft's particular qualifications to make a judgment call either way.

So you would vote to confirm opebo as Ambassador to Thailand?

He isn't qualified for anything -the answer is self-evident.

He's certainly qualified for that. The guy is a total expert on Thailand.

No.  The people of Missouri had the right idea when they decided they were better off with a dead guy.

Intellectually, perhaps.  The problem is he would have to actually work to earn the status of a foreign service diplomat, and with a resume as short as his likely is, he would be rejected almost immediately.  You need a work history to apply for anything that prestigious.  And assuming that he does become a foreign service diplomat to Thailand, he would then have to work for a living by writing reports and meeting ambassadors and diplomats from other countries.  He wouldn't last long even if he did land the job.  Tongue

More than facts about a country are required for diplomacy. Things like diplomatic skills are things opebo lacks.

Actually, you're totally wrong, Frodo.  Ambassadors are rich men who donate large amounts to presidential campaigns.  They are most definitely not foreign service officers!

Some of the postings, Mexico, UK, Japan are "political" appointments, e.g. John Gavin, Joe Kennedy, Mike Mansfield, receptively.  Others are not, in the case of April Glasspie and Joe Wilson; they were both career diplomats (though confirmed by the Senate).

Ashcroft was appointed as a way of thanking the Religious Right for the role they played in Bush's 2000 campaign. I read this somewhere a while back.

I remember Ashcroft's confirmation hearings, Dick Durbin really went at him and thats why Durbin is one of my favorite Senators. Its a shame he made that US Soldiers/Nazi remark last year or he could have been up for bigger things.

I never would have voted to confirm Ashcroft.

I'm trying to see what "terrible" thing he did in his tenure that give me second thoughts.  I didn't see any.

It's a tough decision.  I believe he was qualified, but he lacked the personality that we've come to expect from government officials lately (not that it should be a qualifier).  I met John (and his son Jay) once before, just before the floods in Missouri back in 1992 I think.  His son (he looked like he was in his 20s) was chatty, but John barely spoke, nor responded to humor.  Maybe that's why he lost to a dead man.
