Shame.

Great movie.  I really wish we had more quality NC-17 American films.  I think we're ready as a nation for it.  Something as dark as Shame isn't profitable, but I bet something like Magic Mike could have still made just as much money as an NC-17.

I doubt it; it would be much harder to market something out-and-out pornographic and make it socially acceptable for the women of America to go to the theater and watch.

The marketing for Magic Mike was already suggestive. On it's budget, it only needed 20 million gross to profit and it made 150 million.   Even if it only made $30 mil as NC-17, that's enough in my mind.

Frankly, I think it could have made even more if they had actually nude males.  Girls I know who saw it already acted like and accepted that they were being perverse by going to see the R rated version.  They probably would have watched it again in theaters if Tatum's dick had made a full frontal appearance.

I want to, but New Mexico theaters aren't exactly the best place to see ultra-limited releases.

Guess you have to wait for the DVD. The funny thing is that Matthew McConaughey plays basically the same character he plays in all those stupid romantic comedies, it's just that this time he also happens to be a murderous sociopath.

Arbitrage.

Richard Gere kind of showed why he was never sought after for much besides romantic comedies. He didn't come across as a ruthless billionaire at all, more like a stressed out middle manager. The rest of the cast was quite impressive though, as was the script and direction. I can see why lots wouldn't like it though, the movie never quite decides if it's a police procedural, family drama, or Wall Street thriller.

Grateful Dead: Trucking up the Buffalo

Great concert film, I plan on watching the Grateful Dead movie tommorow or on Tuesday. One of the staffers I work with let me borrow them. The Dead are amazing.

The Master

This was worth watching a lot more for the acting and awesome cinematography than plot or story, it didn't have much of one really, it was kind of just a bunch of vignettes about the interactions of the Hoffman character and the Joaquin Phoenix character. Phoenix really impressed me, Hoffman was up to par but that's expected, Phoenix well exceeded my expectations. It's no There Will Be Blood though but I wasn't expecting that to be topped.

The Master

Absolutely loved it. Probably my favorite of the year so far. Hopefully Phoenix will win Best Actor for this. I think the most surprising thing about it was just how funny it was.

It's definitely an acquired taste though. I've heard from many people who hated it.

Elle s'appelait Sarah

The scenes from Sarah's youth/the Vel d'Hiv were very engaging. Scott-Thomas carries the modern day stuff well enough, but it ventures into mellow-drama a bit much for my tastes through the third act. Worth watching.

I was going to see The Master, but the first screening got cancelled so I saw Looper

Pretty cool.  Very strange.  It felt like an M. Night Shyamalan action movie (good M. Night not recent stuff).

Chopping Mall. I'm doing a whole Halloween horror movie-a-thon this month. As for the movie, you can't go wrong with killer robots. Oh, how I love 80's horror movies. Though, now that I think about it, there was no actual 'chopping' in this movie. Oh well.

Dredd

Unique, fun and incredibly violent. Don't overthink it though obviously. Too bad it's bombing, I would have liked to have seen a sequel.
