This changes the GOP Primary. Vander Platts was never a serious opponent to Nussle, but he has strength in Western Iowa where Nussle does not. He always adds a great deal of funds to the GOP Campaign.

I wonder if he's from that stupid Sioux County that voted like 86% for Bush. Its weird that Holland is so liberal yet Dutch-Americans are ulta-conservative, not just in Iowa but Michigan too.

Why else would they have left?

LOL.  I'm still hoping that Chet Culver wins just because of the strong Democratic tide sweeping the statehouses.  Iowa had Republican Governors from 1968 to 1998: surely they can have Democrats until 2014?

I would think it had more to do with religious differences than politics.  That combined with rural agricultural issues, perhaps?  Most Dutch immigrated to milk farming areas, I think.

You have to understand that Iowa is in no way as Democratic now as it was in the 1960's. It is true the Democrats gained in the statehouses, btu they do not controll either.

True. For example the SGP party is unique in Europe.

Women are denied membership of the party, the party is against television, radio, gambling, vaccination, and everything else God forbids. A large group in the party also refuses to take insurances. The party supports a theocracy, and their website is closed on Sundays.
http://www.sgp.nl. The SGP was founded in 1918, and have since 1921 always been represented with 2 or MPs, or about 2% of the votes, in some municipalities in the so called bible belt, their support is over 20%:

Although the SGP is an extreme example, there are a lot of Calvinists in this country. Prime Minister Balkenende is one of them. And this group is the same group that settled in Michigan and Iowa. Some Reformed churches still have branches in both US and the Netherlands.
