I believe prostitution should be legal, though regulated.

If it must be illegal, a fine would be more appropriate than jail time.

I believe in socialized, government-run prostitution.  The private sector has failed.

I don't think we should spend time going after prostitutes and throwing them in jail or fining them, but rather go after pimps.

Jail time of six to eighteen months depending on the level of the offense. Also, a fine equal to one hundred times the price of the encounter, to be paid separately by both parties.

As with the other poll on marijuana penalties, if prostitution were to remain illegal, fines should be the maximum penalty inflicted.  I don't really see the point of throwing a hooker in jail except to keep her warm on cold nights....

programming alert:  The Professionals (copyright 1966) is just starting on TCM.  This one feels like a typical Sam Pekinpah movie.  Very very cowboy.  But it's actually not a Peckinpah. Nevertheless, if you like the over-the-top old school cowboy violence, misogyny, stereotypical Mexican bandit portrayals, and general gun violence of Peckinpah, you'll love this one.  This one's set in Nevada circa 1920, and like most Pekinpah movies, all the women in the film are prostitutes.  My favorite Pekinpah movie is The Wild Bunch, set in Texas and Mexico circa 1910, and this has many similar elements.  ("Damn whores, always getting me into trouble.  I knew I shoulda killed that particular whore when I had the chance.")  Check it out now on TCM.

Pekinpah was realistic - in the Old West, on the frontiers, naturally almost all women present would be there working as prostitutes.  There were far more men than women, and those men needed sex.
