Ha ha!
The UK Conservatives have elected Michael Howard as leader, the former home secretary and most unpopular member of the 1992-97 Major government. Will they ever learn? Latest opinion polls show...
Labour 38% (unchanged)
Conservative 32% (down 3%)

Who will they elect next? Atilla The Hun? Or his he too left wing for them?

You know what my line is....

Howard is a safe pair of hands and a political professional that will inspire a sense of competency and effectiveness.

Howard doesn't dazzle, but that's not his job, regardless of how much as it offends Guardian readers and Yasmin Ahlabi-Brown that he doesn't share their sensibilities.  But which poltiical strategist would really worry about the collective sensibilities of London N1 anyway?

His job is to shake the Tories out of a sense of faux complacency and learn to hate being in Opposition so that they will do what is necessary to win again.

I think he will do that well.

It's not London he'll have the problem with...
The fact is that he is associated with a deeply unpopular government(two actually) and is responsible for a lot of bad legislation(section 28, the poll tax etc.)

I have to admit that Howard's PMQ performances have been quite impressive so far. He certainly doesn't share IDS's timidity, or Hague's crudeness. I can see the Tories making up some ground at the next election, especially with Blair refusing to get off the tightrope over top-up fees.
