I agree with that for the most part. Fortunately we haven't crossed that line yet.
Bascially if you'd said a unified national ID for foreigners who are here on work visas/students I'd have agreed with you.
We can do that too. Some states already have different card designs for citizens and residents, as well as the national immigration cards. However, if you standardize the whole "card" aspect, the confusion between 50 different state card designs as well as immigrant cards and replace it with one or two cards. The system will be administered by the state, but controlled and reviewed by the national level, so the chances of one person having multiple cards (or someone stealing someone elses SSN) would be greatly reduced and quickly identified in a national database.
