There are few wealthy people who are socially conservative and fiscally liberal.  For the most part, affluent fiscal liberals are also strongly liberal on social issues.  But I don't know why they would be considered "phoney."

You mean (I guess) in the mold that John Edwards was trying to make himself into during the 2004 primaries.

In that case, yes.

Depends on how they use their money, I suppose. If they use large portions of their money to help the common man and do not attempt to exploit him they wouldn't be phoneys. If they talked the talk but didn't walk the walk they would be.

I hate the way people bring this question up all the time to me.
To me, they are voting against their own interests in order to help others.  Why does that make them phoneys???  It makes them heroes in my eyes.

The problem, ian, is that in many cases, they vote for bad policies that sound good, in order to assuage their consciences about their level of privilege, and then use their money to escape the effects of those policies.  So they've now voted to inflict bad policies on people not as well off as they are.  That doesn't sound like a hero to me.
