Senate Signs Off on Revised Patriot Act

From Associated Press
1:10 PM PST, March 2, 2006

WASHINGTON -- The Senate voted overwhelmingly to renew the USA Patriot Act, after months of pitched debate over legislation that supporters said struck a better balance between privacy rights and the government's power to hunt down terrorists.

The 89-10 vote marked a bright spot in President Bush's troubled second term as his approval ratings dipped over the war in Iraq and his administration's response to Hurricane Katrina. Renewing the act, congressional Republicans said, was key to preventing more terror attacks in the United States.

Bush, in a statement issued by the White House while he was in India, applauded the Senate for overcoming what he said were attempts by Democrats to block the bill's passage.

"This bill will allow our law enforcement officials to continue to use the same tools against terrorists that are already used against drug dealers and other criminals, while safeguarding the civil liberties of the American people," he said.

Critics maintained the bill is weighted too much toward the interests of law enforcement.

The House was expected to pass the legislation next week and send it to Bush, who would sign it before 16 provisions expire March 10.

That's a very strange list. Only thing not really surprising about it is that it has Feingold and no Republicans.

Well the GOP is a more or less united party with the wings not being too different so that's to be expected.

On DailyKos, there are people saying that we need someone to run against Boxer in the primary. Some people are a little short-sighted. Yeah, let's run someone against her in 2010 because she once didn't vote the way we wanted 5 years ago.

She's hardly alone here, Ted Kennedy, Dick Durbin, Paul Sarbanes, Reed (RI) also voted yes.

Yes, because they're horrible people.

They generally have good records, even though they blew it on this issue.

I knew it -they're all DINOs.  Let's replace them with real progressives who really know how to stand up for our individual liberties.

Isn't boxer a hard left socialist? Personally I think the dems leaning left on economics is a bad idea because being left on both economics AND social points opens up the dems to attacks from the rich against the "uppity lower orders" and populist type attacks on "riuch college kids telling us what to do". The dems should move right on economics and left on social issues.

I know; it's similar to the reactions to senators not voting against cloture with Alito.

Senators like Boxer and Ted Kennedy are pretty damn socially liberal. Beats me why they voted for this.

That is silly, if you mean they fear losing their seats.  Or do you mean they might be assassinated like that Wellstone?

I'm going to personally mine for and dig up every single time you've said that when either the Democrats retake Congress or a Democrat wins a presidential election.

Not only political.  Fear that there will be another attack.  They work in a nice large building that might as well have a bulls-eye painted on it.

I'm very disappointed in Mark Dayton. He's not even going to run again, so why is he voting yes on this crap?

Coleman is a dirty opportunistic bastard, and I expect this sort of crap out of him.
