Okay has anyone actually defined McMansion yet?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McMansion

Its essentially a large house thats built out of sh**tty materials.

A very interesting article right there.

I've delivered a lot to pizzas to numerous types of McMansions. Seen all the designs, all the features, even the weird "great rooms" which combine living/dining/kitchen into one room, only separated by a half-wall or something. I'm not a fan of most of these houses -- as most seem, well, very superficial.

I prefer the Sears house which came and a kit and were of various shapes, sizes and floors. I guess it was the McMansion of the 20's and 30's but you bought them through the Sears catalog.

'20's and '30's eh? Interesting; a lot of the *style* of that Sears thing looks a hell of a lot like the style of inter-war Semis over here (with some very obvious exceptions o/c).

Hmm, adjusting for inflation, that's around $15k.

Well, do a google image search of "sears houses" and you get many many many dozens of varieties, from large mansions, to small cottages.

Examples :

Cottage :

Farm House :

(One of my favorites, btw)

Large House :

Well, the house would come to your town by railcar broken down with the plans. You would have to buy your own nuts, bolts, screws and nails. Everything else was included in the kit and you had to hire someone to assemble it or you had to do it yourself. Wonderful old houses, I grew up in one.

I live in a "McMansion," and I consider myself to be left-leaning.

Interesting; it's not so much the design (which reminds me of the generic Post-War pre-fabs more than anything else) but some other things... this isn't a great example (best I could find on a ten second google search though) but it shows some features pretty well:

What's always struck me as distinctive about them (other than the size; houses over here have historically been quite small*) is the windows and all that.

I guess so.

As already stated, McMansions are large homes built out of cheap materials, that are sold at cheap prices way out in the exurbs. I think the cheapy-built part is the largest criticism of them.

this is damn stupid, brtd.

im still not exactly sure what a 'mcmansion' is.  is it a house with a lawn and drive way?

if that is the case, yes that is far superior to living in a dumpy apartment pissing away money on hyper-inflated rent and living at the mercy of a crooked landlord.

since when did owning a house become 'uncool'?

kids today.  i just dont get them

Condominiums. Perhaps you've heard of them?

Don't worry, worker.  At the rate you're going, you'll probably stay cool.

you dont know anything about me.

i just made a move in my life.  to be an 'owner', you seem to have an odd inability to move away from mommy and daddy.  i thought you were rolling in the dough.

I don't think he's making that much. He probably lives on about the same level I do in the US. He could probably live much more comfortably if he saved all his money, but we know what he does half the year in Thailand. Of course, I would most certainly live on my level than in a McMansion, so I say he's doing the right thing.

he is obviously a parasite, brtd.

why do you idolize him?

he is a grown man he lives on his parents money.  my god the man has to pay for bjs.

it's laughable that he looks down on so many people.  he is quite pathetic.

I don't idolize him. I just enjoy his posting here so much since he is one of the most hilarious, witty, insightful and intelligent posters we have. Even though I wouldn't copy his lifestyle, I find it hard to blame him, I hate working and most certainly would prefer not to do so (if I ever win the lottery, you bet I'm quitting my job), and the guy is 37 and clearly not interested in any long term monogamous relationship like marriage, meaning he doesn't have much else of an option other than hookers. It's certainly not a model for my life, but I can't condemn him for what he does.

No, they are.  I have a bit that comes to me regardless, and a bit that is directly mooched, if you see what I mean.  In any case, WalterMitty, no one is really an owner until they inherit, are they?

I don't think he's making that much. He probably lives on about the same level I do in the US.

I find I consume about $2,000/month in Thailand and about $2,500/month in the US.  The difference is when I'm here the parents will pretty much foot the bill.

ok, and you think 'workers' are beneath you?

if we took a random survey of 100 people and told them your lifestyle, 99 would think you were a pathetic human being.

i laugh everytime you try to put someone down.

i laugh everytime you try to put someone down.

People who go around putting others down are just covering for their own inadequacies.

And to answer the original question, yes, you can be a liberal and live in a McMansion.  It happens all the time.

i still find it funny that an 'owner' cant gather up enough resources to move his ass out of 'the bad place'.

there is a lot about opebo that doesnt add up.
