Continuing on with the 1976 theme

In August, 1974, Vice President Gerald Ford becomes the 38th President upon the resignation of President Richard Nixon.

The new President, Gerald Ford, nominates New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller to become Vice President.  Rockefeller wins approval from Congress after a lengthy confirmation hearing, and is sworn in as the 41st Vice President in December, 1974.

Tragically, in November, 1975, President Ford dies in office, and Nelson Rockefeller is sworn in as the 39th President the same day.

The New President, Nelson Rockefeller, nominates Kansas Senator Bob Dole to become Vice President.  Dole wins quick approval from Congress, and is sworn in as the 42nd Vice President in December, 1975.

The 1976 election

Republican
President Nelson Rockefeller (NY)/Vice President Bob Dole (KS)

Democrat
Former Governor Jimmy Carter (GA)/Senator Walter Mondale (MN)

president rockefeller gets massacred in the south, but still wins the election.

rockefeller/dole: 51%, 288 EVs
carter/mondale: 48%, 250 EVs

sympathy vote likely wins the close election for rockefeller.
