Not a particularly large national debt given the size of our economy.  Of course the idea of tax cuts and large deficits was to constrain wasteful social spending - 'Starve the Beast'.  I'm not sure if it has worked but at least we haven't had any other horrible initiatives like the New Deal or Great Society.  In fact the latter has been rolled back just a little.

Seven trillion.  Not bad in an 11.25 trillion economy.

Yes it is.  any way you cut it, seven trillion dollars is alot of money, and paying off seven trillion dollars is impossible, no matter how much time you give somebody.

What, 7 Trillion is over half of an 11.25 Trillion $ Economy. If it was at 3 or 4 Trillion, I would say that is pretty good. But over Half?

I'd say it's pretty bad, especially if it's the net debt. That is at -4% in Sweden and -45% in Finland, I believe. Also, with the huge deficit you're running it's getting worse. On the other hand, you're nowhere near the 100%+ in net debt that countries like Belgium or Italy have. THAT is a huge debt! Smiley

True and to always put it in perspective we do give a lot of foriegn aid to other countries and have a lot more military expense than most countries.  These are very big costs that other countries don't have.

So Italy and such don't have much of an excuse.

I agree with military expenses, but foreign aid isn't much of an excuse, in percentage of GDP your foreign aid are among the lowest in the rich world.

I don't see how Carter's endorsement helps.  Dean needs to be judged on his capabilities to be President, not how a president in the 1970s feels about him.  Carter lost 44 states in 1980, including MA and NY.  Maybe Dean hopes he'll only lose 44 states?

Minnisota will go Bush so will Georgia, for that matter.

Acctually, now that I look at it, the states will be totally different, except Maryland and Rhode Island, Bush will carry all of the other states that Carter won in that election.  Dean will carry all the New England states that Reagan won, except New Hampshire and Maine.

It's on the site...but I would guess at Hoover. Taft probably has an alltime record, winning only two states.

OK, Taft won only Utah and Vermont, a total of 1.5% of the EC and 23% of the popular vote. I think that is the worse result ever.

When I think of Jimmy Carter I think of the Georgia state abbreviation-GA, which, thanks to Carter, has ceased to stand for Georgia, and now just stands simply for "Go Away"
