I was watching the local news the other night and a hate group called the Westboro Baptist Church in KS was protesting at a soldiers furneral with signs like "God Hates Fags" and other hateful sayings. What does everybody think of this?

Fred Phelps is not a very nice man.

Basically, he has a tiny congregation run out of his basement called the Westboro Baptist Church, and he believes that anyone who is not an adherent of that particular church is hated by God and will go to Hell.  Even Jerry Falwell thinks the man is a nutcase.

He and his protestors came to my HS because we were putting on a play about Matthew Shepard.  One of their signs said "Thank God for 9/11", fortunetly our counter-protest was much larger than their shenanigans.

That's comforting to hear and all but I wouldn't mind seeing him get some punishment in THIS lifetime and not in some nebulous afterlife(assuming there is even one but I don't feel like getting into THAT debate again right now).

Actually, I believe we should give Kevin a lot of credit for how far he's come. If you look at some of his first posts 11 months ago and some of his more recent, it is amazing how much his use of the English language has improved. As an English teacher, seeing this kind of improvement is incredibly rare. Unbelievable, I tell ya. Good form, 'Kevin'!

And it seems the British posters are having an impact on his English:


Now, if we could just get him to actually quote from the official ballot when he's voting, his vote might get to count before too long.

Er.... opebo, a 'belief in objective morality' is not a very specific belief-system. Ayn Rand, for example, believed in an objective morality, and she and Fred Phelps probably have/had almost nothing else in common in terms of belief systems (for one thing, she was neither a prude nor a religious; for another, while she found homosexuality personally disgusting she was perfectly fine with having it legal). Of course, Falwell and Phelps are much closer philosophically then either is to Rand; however, it's a matter of extremes - like comparing Tito to Pol Pot, or Pinochet to Hitler. Of course, opebo, you probably need moral glasses to see the difference - and besides, absolute moral relativism is an impossibility. 

It's like assuming all religious are capitalists. Quite false, a lot of the Christian groups in Latin America are quite the economic socialists.

This isn't new, and there are now organizations which travel around to funerals of fallen soilders to counter (drown out) these morons.  Thank God some American's get it.  Now, we just need to find a way to make it illegal for morons like this to turn a private, respectful event into a protest rally event.
