Due to the fact that Boss Tweed has decided to remove his abortion bill from the senate floor, I hereby submit the following bill for debate and vote in the senate.  This bill is simply Boss Tweed's original bill with Hughento's proposed amendment.

"No legal abortions shall be permitted after the first trimester of a womans' pregnancy, unless the woman was a victim of rape or incest, or a medical doctor confirms that the mothers' health would be in serious danger if the pregnancy was to continue, and she was forced to bear a child."

All in favor vote Yea.  All opposed vote Nay.

Sure you won't insert incest in there?

I would like to submit an amendment to add the italicised text in

"No legal abortions shall be permitted after the first trimester of a womans' pregnancy, unless the woman was a victim of rape or incest, or a medical doctor confirms that the mothers', fetus' or both's health would be in serious danger if the pregnancy was to continue, and the mother was forced to bear the child."

The amendment is an improvement over the original bill, but I would still veto it.

Please change the word to fetus. This is the Senate, not an inspirational video hosted by Penelope Leach or Berry Brazleton.

While I support this bill in principle I do not feel it will stop women who really want to have an abortion from doing so. They will only look for illegal and thus far more dangerous treatment. In other words, the bill could backfire.

I therefore, regretfully, vote Nay on this bill, with or without the amendment.

Yeah. I've been thinking about this issue and came to the conclusion above. I had a change of heart, basically. It doesn't matter what the government says, some women will get post-1st trimester abortions no matter what. What we need to do is help to create a social environment in which women don't see the need to get an abortion in the first place.

I vote for this amended version of the bill.

Anyone else think we should debate bills A LOT more before they get put to the vote?
