Let's suppose you are given the choice between a stereotypically liberal Democratic candidate who is the darling of DU and DailyKos, and the candidate that I have described above who opposes abortion and favors imposing restrictions on its availability, supports gun rights and the right of law-abiding citizens to carry on their persons concealed guns and opposes efforts by the Brady Campaign to End Gun Violence and other antigun groups to pass gun control legislation, and yet supports raising the minimum wage, forcing large companies like Wal-Mart to provide adequate health care coverage for their employees rather than hoisting health costs on Medicaid, opposes extending tax cuts for the wealthiest and the corporations beyond 2011, and is supportive of efforts to curb greenhouse gas emissions, like the bill that Sens. John McCain and Joe Lieberman tried to push through Congress.

Would you vote for the latter candidate, if given the choice during the Democratic primary?

Probably not.

The Democrats need to become more pro-business IMHO.

We already have one pro-business party -we don't need another.

Shocking though it may be, I am not a Democrat, so I voted accordingly so as not to pollute the results.

No.

I support gun rights but don't support criminalizing abortion, so other things being equal, I would vote for the pro-choice Democrat.

No, but I would vote for him/her in the general.

I voted not a Dem for this poll.

Probably not.

Pro-business and pro-labor are not mutually exclusive.

Perhaps, though I wonder whether phkn has a different interpretation on what 'pro-business' really means than you do.  It is after all a vague term that could encompass anything, and mean anything in the eye of the beholder.  Tongue

Perhaps, but there's more to it than that. Businesses have to sell their products to consumers who are also workers, and if those workers don't make enough money to buy the product, business gets hurt. Similarly, workers need businesses to be profitable to earn more. A president of GM once remarked "what was good for the country was good for General Motors and vice versa." In the 1950s and 1960s the government, the labor unions, and businesses set aside ideological combat and reached mutually beneficial agreements that allowed for free trade, rising profits, and benefits for American workers at the same time. This is the middle ground between socialism and libertarian capitalism and American liberalism will forever occupy this ground.

Though I'm not a fan of Affirmative Action and the whiny poverty pimps a la Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, I'd still vote for the pro-choice, pro-gun control Democrat EVEN IN A PA SENATE PRIMARY!

Sounds similar to Rep. Glenn Poshard when he ran against George Ryan for IL Gov in 1998. He represented extreme southern IL, but lost a large crossover of independents and some Democrats to Ryan. I know some Republicans who did vote for Poshard as the more socially conservative candidate.

It depends on how liberal they are on the environment and the economy, and their foreign policy.

The primary focus of this poll is on domestic issues.

Yes.  A more moderate Democrat like this one is much needed as the party's candidate.

Now why would I want to vote for someone who'll screw up the economy and has conservative social views?

Yes I would vote for someone like that. Howard Dean is against gun control, for example. Its better to have someone who is electable rather than always maintaining a rigid ideology.
