What would your ideal national scenario (besides things like 500 EV landslides, make it somewhat competitive) look like?

Mine would probably look something like my Republican North / Democratic South map I posted on AH.com:

Something like this. The White and Minority working class and poor unite behind a common cause economically progressive, socially moderate party. They however still adopt a non interventionist foreign policy. This gives them a good advantage in presidential elections. Though in exchange the Republican Party is able oust trumpism from its party but in order to remain competitive in the Midwest and open up new states to them, they go full McKinley style protectionist while maintaining a Paleoconservative/Libertarian view on civil liberties and foreign policy fully becoming a party of non intervention and isolationism which means both party's don't support interventionism. Anyway they also moderate a little on economic issues due to the increasing focus on economic policy in the nation. These cause a gain in wealthier minority's (meaning something like a 60/55-45/40 support from Hispanics and a 75/70-30/25% support from blacks) and socially liberal folks which causes a increase Republican gain in population heavy states like California which is only lean dem. Though the democrats have a majority, the county is more depolarized and bigger states are closer in margin which makes landslides more likely.

...So the GOP manages to oust Trumpism while incorporating significant parts of it?

Trumpism without a Trump or his influence is a big part of whatever Trumpism is. With a Trump being taken away and forgotten, the ideology is little more then trade protectionism which itself is borrowed from a earlier history of the party from the McKinley days. They reclaim past republican protectionism to remain competitive and not from any trumpian ideology and also tone down the party's message without a trump.

A close victory might look like this:

Essentially, we would do a lot better among Southern/Midwestern suburbanites (pre-2016 levels), Hispanics, and Bible Belt blacks, while we would do worse among populists and libertarians (and possibly worse with "socially liberal but fiscally conservative" suburbs, at least compared to pre-2016).

Swing states:
Pennsylvania, Nevada, Minnesota, Virginia, Montana, Alaska, Colorado, ME-02, Wisconsin, Michigan

States that are notably not competitive: New Mexico, Georgia, Arizona, New Hampshire, Florida

Make CA, DE, and HI tossups though, and maybe move something like michigan to lean/likely rather than safe. Just for symmetry reasons

This looks like a Gore victory map in 2000, if he had ran a more competent campaign and Bush had focused more on Florida.

The Democratic party adopts Bernie style positions on economic issues and begin to weed out the establishment/liberal elite, such as the Clintons/Pelosi, becoming less of a social and more of an economic party while adopting libertarian positions on social issues. The GOP takes Trump-like stances on trade and immigration while also putting less of an emphasis on social issues (abortion, gay marriage), rejecting the religious right, and adopting positions of electoral reform. Both move downward on the political compass, the Democrats encompassing the green section and the Republicans the yellow and lower purple section. Both parties become highly competitive in the inner West and Midwest, while the Democrats retain the Northeast/West Coast and the Republicans retain the South.

Moderate voters in states like Virginia and New Jersey, disillusioned with the populist direction of both parties, begin a new Center Party which attracts former members of the moderate wing of the GOP and Democrats and gains some ground in the mid-atlantic and south.
