Both sides were crap. Without hindsight, probably the Parliamentarians, but that's only without hindsight.

Royalists

A few years ago someone told me that they had read that an avowed young Marxist had stated that had he been around at the time of the English Civil War, he would have fought for his King!

I can understand why many contemporary far leftists would support the King against the encroaching power of the bourgeoise

Any non-Episcopalian Protestant able to count to one would support Parliament...

Parlimentarians, clearly. It was Cromwell who allowed Jews to return to England, after all. If Charles won I couldn't even live in England.

Parliamentarians...and given my mom's ancestral side was likely originally English Puritan, strongly so. Cool

Considering that I'm of English Catholic stock I would almost certainly have supported the Royalists back then considering that Cromwell would have made life for people like myself pretty bad.

Seriously? That's very unusual... North Lancashire or the Marches?

I believe so though I'm not completely sure. According to records the Wixted's are originally from the area around Nantwich in Cheshire. I'm not very familiar with English religious geography and I was going to ask you about the history of the area.

Royalist if only because "obedience to just rule" seems better to me than "nothing done by a bunch of squabbling bureaucrats"

As to your question BRTD, while neither side ever attempted prohibition, both sides did attempt to regulate and tax alcohol sales ... quite futilely in fact.
