Hell no.

Would they let North Korea host the Olympics? Iran? Iraq under Saddam? Cuba? Of course not. So why should China be allowed?

I happen to disagree BRTD, the Chinese should be allowed to host the Olympics if they qualify to. China is leagues above Iraq, Iran, North Korea.

I do believe that the Cuban baseball team should be allowed to play as well in many of the games they aren't allowed to.

Although I am very anti-China, I do agree that they should be allowed to host the Olympics. Shutting them out from this type of an event would do more harm than good, due to them being antagonized by it and also the fact that allowing athletes from all over the world to come there will be beneficial for all involved.

As for the objectionable countries that you list, the Soviet Union was allowed to host the Summer Games in 1980, even after they had invaded Afghanistan.

Of course, most of the Western world boycotted those Olympic Games, so it's not exactly as if it went off without a hitch.

As for the question asked, I don't really care.  If they're able to pull it off, why not?

I voted no because I wanted Toronto to win Wink T.O. had the better bid, and last I checked lacked the human rights abuses that China has.

Have you seen what the Leafs did to their fans this year?

"The Olympics should bring people together and not be about politics."

Yup. I mean, they are a highly political event, in pretty much every facet, but that shouldn't stop a Chinese hosting.

Quick rundown...
1988 Seoul... when this was decided South Korea was IIRC a very nasty dictatorship...
1980 Moscow...
I could go on and on... if I had memorized olympics dates and places that is. Smiley

FIFA world Cup...
1978 Argentina...
1962 Chile...
1934 Italy...
Not sure about Brazil 1950 and Uruguay 1930... and of course, with a bit of badwill, you could include Mexico 1970 and 1986 (and Italy 1990 Grin )...

I'd have to agree. Jesse Owens winning 4 gold medals with Adolf Hitler in attendance was pretty classic.

As I pointed out though, the countries I mentioned would never be considered.

Can imagine the whining from American conservatives if Havana ever got the bid?

None of the countries you mentioned has anywhere near the investment capital to build the facilities to host the games so it's a moot point.

Since they won the vote, yes, they can.  Although I wouldn't have voted for them.

If Pyongyang won the vote, they should be allowed to host too, although that would never happen.

Should the IOC "ban" China from having the Olympics? Hell no, China is a full-fledged member of the IOC, they should get the same rights as everyone else.

Did Beijing deserve the bid? I personally would have voted for Toronto, but it's not as bad as some recent Olympic cities. (Atlanta? WTF!) The IOC doesn't really have much of a leg to stand on if it were to deny China the Olympiad based on human rights violations, considering where some of the games have been.

It was completely necessary for 2008 to go to Asia. China is one of the top olympic nations and put forward a strong bid.

Yes.  The IOC is a private organization.  It should not receive any special assistance from the U.S. in any way but should be free to operate as it sees fit, even if that means aiding human rights abusers.
