Farming has changed since the days of Mecken; the assumption that farmers are individuals of lesser intelligence is archaic.

Besides, Mecken blames them for not being intellectual.  How is this their fault?  It is genetics'.  They are doing hard work, which is within their capabilities.  Mecken comes across as a bully here.

Sorry, Im a product of my enviorment. Growing up with farms, cows, and farmers everywhere, having tractor pulls at community fairs, and surrounded by a thriving FFA, I have to say positive.

How's what Farmers do any different than what producers of other goods do? The members/leaders of every industry try to secure favorable conditions for themselves...

Yeah, because there's a lot of corporations decrying corporate welfare, too.

People generally do not protest things that give them money.  This is new?

That depends what sort of farmer you're talking about. But the sort of farmer I hate didn't really exist in the U.S at the time that vicious b*ll*cks was written, and I tend to have a good opinion of small farmers (not that there are many left) and a higher one of agricultural workers (after all, without the latter... you starve).

I fail to see how farmers are all that different from anyone else.

Well they do tend to smell of a strange mixture of strong alcohol and animal sh*t... Wink

I have an idea, let's abolish the farming profession and then see how we fare.

I thought it was arrantly melodramatic.

Neither positive nor negative.  They are simply either a) owners or b) workers, like any other class-members.

However growing up on a farm (admittedly hobby-farms run at an enormous annual loss) I can say it is highly unpleasant in some ways - isolation, feces, hay-making, rebellious beasts, etc., while being fairly positive in others - giving one a feeling of being 'landed gentry', the panache of having ponies in one's youth, a favorite duck, etc.

I haven't read a post in this thread and I'm not going to. This isn't a political issue.

I have a positive opinion of farmers, and whilst they might have political ideologies I don't like, it's a firm view.

I don't get it.  Why are some people supposed to have a negative opinion of farmers?
