One of my former employees was from there (and has since returned).  I receive periodic photo's from her home town.  Here are two which I have handy:

Most of the Russian hookers in Thailand (what few are left after the crackdowns) are Kazakhstan or Uzbeckistani.  Many are at least partially ethnic Russian though.

hahaha . . . yeah.  I remember asking her about the paint job on the buildings, and if that was done so people could see them during the Winter or something.  She said they were actually painted that way for some new years celebration . . . and were never repainted afterwards.  *laughs*

I love the church building though.  It has great design features.

You haven't seen the post-Soviet cities. These are actually some of the prettier ones (and it is a smallish block, in comparison). Also, from the distance you can't see the paint peeling.

The paint job is very reminiscent of East Germany.

I once had a flatmate born and raised in the European part of Kazakhstan.

Ok, those tower blocks you describe could even be as bad as the ones in the Bronx. Wink

A big difference is color: there they prefer white/ish, w/ occasional color splotches on the newer buildings - you don't get the dark brick, except in some of the smaller 1950s buildings, but even there the brick is less dark.   Otherwise, Soviet appartment blocks dwarf anything on this side of the Atlantic. I'd estimate that in Moscow alone some 8 mln. people live like this.

And the evils of Communism are laid out for all to see. Wink
