AIDS gets about $180,000 in research funds per death, while its closest rivals, Parkinson's Disease, prostate cancer, and diabetes receive about $14,000 per death. Alzheimer's gets about $11,000. Cancer is even lower, and the risk of getting cancer is about 25 for the general population.

relative to other diseases, I think it is. We should spread the money out a little more.

I'm saying no, simply because AIDS is a bigger problem to the world than cancer or Parkisons, and the US, as the world leader in medical research, has an obligation to spend money on such a massive problem.

I agree, but still, it gets 10x more than any other disease. Should we at least have a little more in leading cancer research?

AIDS is a mostly preventable disease.
Cancer isn't.

And? Preventing it from spreading even further in the world will still leave millions infected with the disease.

What about the millions that suffer and die from cancer? Are they less worthy?
Especially when they are the ones footing the bill.

I'd rather they spent money on a child in Africa who had the HIV virus than on an obese fast-food munching westerner who got heart disease due to his own crappy lifestyle.

And this is why arguing about it is so dumb. Should we adopt a system where each infected person is worth x amount of dollars?

Yes.  There are other diseases that we need to find cures for like cancer and diabetes.  We need to spread it out.

It depends.  Is this AIDS statistic dollars per American infected with AIDS or per any citizen of the world infected with AIDS?  Looking at the link, I suspect it's per American, but compared to the rest of the world the US has it easy as far as AIDS is concerned.

No -unlike other diseases, HIV-AIDS has the potential to level entire economies of third world nations by decimating their workforce and militaries. It has had more of an impact than any other disease in recent history, and one more consequential for the health of the global economy.

No.  AIDS effects young people, while most of the diseases mentioned in this thread effect the old, who will die very soon anyway.

No, although research funding for the other diseases listed should be increased.

If this is government spending, it should all be done away with.
