In 2004, if John Kerry had been able to get John McCain for his Vice Presidential running mate, would this have been enough to put Kerry over the top?

Or what other effect would this have had on the election results?

Please discuss.

Thanks.

Kerry would have won. I vaguely remember reading a poll in like April 2004 that showed a Kerry/McCain ticket with a double digit lead over Bush/Cheney. Bush would've turned that double digit lead into a single digit lead with the Republican National Convention, but Kerry's debate performances would've ensured a Kerry victory.

13 point lead.

It could have turned out much as the last election did; or it could have been a very solid Kerry win. It's hard to tell.

hat is not being put into account is the attack machine President Bush had in 2004.

He could have ran ads declaring Kerry-McCain, "The Ultimate Flip-Flop Ticket." The Swift Boat Vets would still have attacked Kerry, and Kerry would fumble it as bad as he did in RL. Cheney would still have beaten McCain in the debate as bad as he did Edwards.

One must understand that in American Politics people respond to fear and anger, not love. They don't teach that in Sunday School, but its the truth.

Nonetheless, Kerry/McCain is still much stronger than Kerry/Edwards.  Additionally, McCain would have come to Kerry's rescue on the Swift Boat stuff, and he is a much more respected war hero.  I mean, A&E even made a TV movie about him.  I say Kerry/McCain beats Bush/Cheney anywhere from 52-47 from 54-45.

Missouri and West Virginia were not open to Kerry.  Period.

The two biggest egotists in Washington (maybe on the face of the planet) on the same ticket?

Bahahahahahahahaha.   That would have been fun to watch.

Can you imagine President Kerry appointing one of his lefties to the Supreme Court and McCain trying to defend that appointee with a straight face?  Not possible.  Nope, that was one Dem wet dream that was NEVER going to happen.  Ranks right up there with the John Edwards is gonna make Kerry competitive in the South fantasy.

When Kerry's base learned how phony McCain is, we'd've lost heart and bolted, causing Kerry to lose by an even bigger margin.

Nah, the Kerry/McCain fantasy would have fizzled away. Everyone thought to themselves. "What a great choice Lieberman is! He brings so much balance to the ticket - gore is sure to win now!"....same concept. For every one conservative he would draw in, McCain would push away 3 liberals. Still a sound loss for Kerry. They may have picked up Iowa...but that's all I'm giving them.
